MITES 2010 Information & Discussion

I just submitted it. Wow! this is such a different feeling than the one I had when I submitted TASP’s.
I truly feel like I did everything I could possibly do.
I gave it my best and I hope I’ll be really thrilled with the results April 19th.
One question: did we have to mail the request for a letter of rec?
Otherwise, goodbye. goodluck…
and APRIL 19TH baby!

Submitted everything. Except for that confirmation sheet thing, I don’t think it’s too important though…I hope not. Anyways, my stats weren’t the best. My essays and teacher recs were good though. Anyone else here from North Dakota? Or Native American?

I have to submit my package this week… the snow in VA meant no school for a whole week (didn’t get back the recs yet) so the MITES people said I could submit it after the postmark deadline which was nice of them. =)

The 300 word limit was so… limiting =p

Good luck to everyone!

@MIT15 my stats aren’t the best, and I’m Asian (south asian) but applying won’t hurt me so I applied.

@nil: I’m wondering the same thing about the request for rec.

Wow, clicking that submit button made me feel great! Now the painful waiting period starts. Well, good luck to everyone!

@hpaero1
I’m south asian too and my stats aren’t great. But you never know what could happen.
See you all on April 19th! :)

woohoo another south asian! =p

@MIT 15…I scanned the confirmation page and emailed it to the MITES email as an attachment and I think that’s fine with them (unless the email they sent back was automated).

My stats are pretty good I think, I wasn’t able to read my teacher recs but all 3 writers like me as a student, and I thought my essays were pretty good, especially the last two…even though only the last one threatened the 300 word limit. I am Hispanic btw.

I’m not too confident in my writing, but ah well.
Hispanic here, also. (Cuban, to be precise.)

And now to forget everything until April. Huzzah!

Thinking it was all due by 12am I submitted an essay which I did under 30 minutes, hopefully all goes well.
My stats are not spectacular so if I don’t get in, I would not feel that bad for writing a 30 minute essay, it was worth giving it a chance.
Oh and I also didn’t send the online confirmation, please update any information regarding this.
Good Luck to every hopeful out there :)

omg how funny, we both came back to the website lol

I just submitted mine, I feel a lot better now, and reading this thread made me less worried, as my councilor and my physics teacher (hopefully!) sent my letters and transcript in separate packages. That confirmation sheet freaked me out though… but oh well :P

My friend helped me with the essays and told me about ‘hidden’ prompts his criticizing brother (Got to Cornell with a full ride scholarship) and dad have trained him to find. He said that the essays looked for:

o Essay 1: What are your career goals? How might attending MITES support these goals?

 • A love for learning

o Essay 2: Which one of your extracurricular or volunteer activities is most important to you and why?

 • A will to exceed and, possibly, your love for competion

o Essay 3: How has your racial or ethnic identity affected your academic development? How has it influenced your aspirations?

 • The role of race in your character, your sense of pride.

o Essay 4: Please describe a personal, social, or academic challenge you have faced and overcome.

 • Enjoying challenges

@paledot your Hispanic? What are your stats?
@TQSMNTASP what are your stats as well because you are Hispanic.

Another reply  is there anywhere where you can find the statistics on MITES 2009?

does anybody know if we were supposed to elaborate on our honors and extracurriculars? or do we just list and state them?

@romeovertome…I think you are just supposed to list them, unless an activity is so obscure or its name misleading that it requires clarification/explanation.

@Robert18…by stats do you mean SAT scores, rank, GPA, etc.?

@Robert 18

My PSAT scores are as follows:
CR - 74 (720 on the actual thing)
M - 68 (650 on the actual thing, sigh)
W - 68 (680 [lol] on the actual thing)
Took the SAT in January

I have a 3.96/4.00 and a 6.4 weighted GPA
I don’t remember entering my AP scores but I got a 5 in calculus and a 3 in bio and some other 5s in non-science related tests.

My extracurriculars are unremarkable. NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, the usual.

That’s about everything I can think of in terms of stats.

I have a 4.67 Weighted, 4.0 Unweighted. 67-CR 65-M 69- W. Anyone from ND ever get accepted? Or any Native Americans applying? I wish we didn’t have to wait so long to find out if we’re accepted!! What other summer programs are you guys applying for? Perferably free ones, lol, or ones with financial aid.

whoa you guys have really good stats :)

are your schools super competitive?
the students in my school are too competitive… it kind of scares me sometimes =p

@hpaero: These were my stats at the time I applied. I gave some more info on post 154.
PSAT: 191
SAT at that time: 2010 (Math: 710, CR & Writing: 650)
ACT: 31
And no, my school is not very competitive at all. Nobody the class of 2010 even applied Ivy League and only one person from last year applied. He was rejected.

@chrisakelly: How were you ECs, Awards, etc?

Ok I’ll post my stats even though I think essays will count the most:

Like I said I’m Hispanic.
1/100
4.57/4.0 W; 4.0/4.0 Unweighted
PSAT: 211 (67 CR; 71 M; 73 W)…Note: got a 223 sophomore year but they wont know that
SAT: 2340 (740 CR; 800 M; 800 W)
EC’s: NHS, Mu Alpha, Science NHS, Spanish NHS, Q&S Honor Soc., Model UN, Lit Mag, Academic Team, Teen Court (alot of community service hours here), Varsity Tennis, Varsity Soccer, Ball Kid at Pro Tennis Tourney (that was fun)

And MITES doesn’t factor in SAT Subject and AP’s but so far 700 Math 1, 770 World, 5’s in AP World, Euro, and Stats…takeing 5 APs this year.

But like I said the differences will be gleaned from the essays, not stats.
