MITES 2010 Information & Discussion

@hpaero1
lol yeah you should :smiley: haha.

yeahh true, they probably did get into other great universitites.

ohh yeahh april 16, my bad… lol. im so bad at memory haha. i didn’t even have school on pi day lol. we NEVER eat pi in math class, it sucks :confused: haha. && yeah same we’re rushing to finsish in time for AP exams.

^
haha, i didn’t have school either. The pre-calc classes had a pi day party on friday march 12 or thurs. We always ate pie…ahh well I guess AP classes ruin the fun =p.
Oh we’re rushing so much. We started school on sep. 8 and then we lost an additional one week this year due to snowdays and AP test date never changes.
we have 3 units left in ap chem and like a month until the AP…soo screwed.

I have bad memory too. I just remembered it because it’s 2 days after my sis’s b-day. =p
i won’t get in, but it’s still fun to wait hehe.

but like even in my pre-calc or alg 2 lol. they didn’t caree!! haha, oh well next year i should start the tradition in calc bc lol.
omgshhhhh :open_mouth: i hope you do goood, i shouldn’t be complaing then, we started like aug 16, with no snow breaks or anything.

aww your sisters birthday thats sweet :slight_smile: haha.
uh, nooo have confidence! you have to get in! :slight_smile: lol.

@robert18. idk why you just mentioned you being hispanic. it doesn’t really matter to the conversation.
@hpaero. lemme rephrase it. it helps admission when you’re not as qualified as the other applicants. but there are plenty of overqualified hispanic individuals too. i’m not discriminating. i’m just saying, it helps admission and we can’t do anything about it.

@lexluthor okay chill i just said it because the topic was about hispanics, duh.

robert18: congrats for being hispanic.

hey! i haven’t really posted on here for a while but i was wondering, is it bad that i still haven’t received a confirmation e-mail yet? O_o I mean, i forgot about it for a while and i didn’t want to bother them before because i was afraid of looking too eager or pushy but like a month has passed. do any of you know if it’s just because they send the email as they look at the application and maybe mine just hasn’t been reviewed yet?

in our class we had to bring in circular foods in order to celebrate pi day, so that was cool.

i wish i went to a school with people who are actually interested in college, math, and science! i live in a rural town (i like to call it a village lol) and everyone here either gets pregnant, drops out, or goes to the community college that’s an hour away. The kids in the honors program, which consists of about 20 students, only go to Georgia Tech, UGA,or Emory. The kids in the other programs at school go to Georgia Southern or Valdosta State. All of them are caucasian. I’m the only minority in the honors program in my junior class. There hasn’t been a minority in the program in about 4 years.

yeah… diversity doens’t exist at my school at all!

@ambaturkey11
omgsh my town is the same way!! we are basically the poorest part in the whole country. Everyone in my town is basically living in poverty and such and its terrible. I feel bad. Everyone also get pregnant, drops out, and goes to a community college as well. We dont really have an “honors” program though, i think we dont have enough intelligent kids to have that, its basically take whatever classes you want. Wow Georgia Tech, and Emory? thats amazing, not at my school they go to a university thats about an hour away from where i live, but no where “big” or even out of state! And with your school having any diversity, mine is basically the same way, except slightly different. 98% of my school is hispanic, and 2% other. So thats the only down side. I think its because we live about 5 min. away from mexico. Everyone at my school is minority.

@aresenalcrazy
wow, i think you should contact them… it has been a month, and no confirmation email yet?! wow, thats crazy, i dont think their looking at applications and sending the confirmation email, i think they send out all confirmation emails then start looking at the applications.

i wonder if they’ve already made their decisions…i really want to call but i don’t want to be annoying

is anyone excited about the state science fair? I think winning at state would make my life (and of course getting into MITES!)
@ robert18… if you said 98% hispanic around here, they’ll say “don’t you mean 98% mexican?!” it’s like “really?”., but i’m not surprised because they think every one should speak american. yes, not english, american., better yet, 'merican.

Our school has this “honors” /gifted program called “04” aka your parents have money and lets make them happy lol. That’s only about 20 kids, but only 5 are truly smart/gifted. Then you have the rest of the school which is college prep program “03” and is mixed with whites and a few blacks and a couple of hispanics, then you have “02” which is sad to say, just a place to put the rest of the low performing kids, the majority of the 02 kids are black. I’m the only black kid and minority in the honors program in the junior class. Our school is 50% black 48% white, and 2% hispanic.

oh and the tech thing, yeah its pretty cool especially since GA residents get instate tuition, and if you have a 3.0+ GPA GA will pay for your tuition and college fees. But i dont think my school has sent a minority to tech. hopefully i’ll be the first =] !

@Robert
oh really?? not even in alg2 and precalc? haha we’ve been doing it since alg. 1 =D
i hope I do… I need to start studying. Aug 16?..ooo

haha thanks
lol i don’t have confidence =p i’m not as qualified as a lot of people applying.
thanks for the encouragement though. :slight_smile: you have to get in! =D

@lexluthor
i don’t think they would take the underqualified hispanic. It may be true that if both people are qualified at about the same level then maybe the hispanic has more chance since their population in prestige colleges tends to be on the lower side. I’m sure you’re not discriminating, but you sound a bit bitter about the fact that qualified hispanics probably have a better chance at getting into a good college over the white, asian, etc. But yeah, it’s true there are overqualified hispanics too.

@arsenal
Oh…wow. That’s a long time. you might want to call them and ask

@ambaturkey
doesn’t GA tech have a good engineering program?

yes they def. would take the underqualified hispanic. go look at the threads for this years mit acceptances.

@ambaturkey11 omgsh :open_mouth: call for what?! to see if you got accepted?! yeahh, dont do that :/

eh’ im sort of excited for state, i’m in a team project and they’ve kinda given up since we didn’t make it to ISEF. when is your state science fair? i think mines the first saturday of april, i doubt we’ll place though :/

lol. thats funny, 98% mexican, thats what they call it at my school too :stuck_out_tongue: they dont know that they are hispanic lol. Most of the students know very little english though, and their very first language was spanish. unfortunately for me, my first language was english, and never learned spanish :/

omgsh its so sad, how they split you guys up, how big is your school?!

lol i hope you’re the first too :smiley: and texas doesn’t do anything like that lol.

@hpaero1 i need to start studying too! my spring break is about to end :confused: i at least want a 5 in calc, a 4 in physics, and a 3 in english language.

i’m not qualified as most people applying either, ahh idk :open_mouth: i really do hope i get accepted but i have backups this summer in case i dont lol.

@lexluthor can you put the link up? :)

^
Oh you’re on spring break?
We have one more week until spring break.
Hehe I want a 5 in calc, 4 in BC and… 4 in hist and 4 in lang. All 5s would be nice, but I don’t think I can do that lol

you’re more qualified than me =p
haha i have a backup but it’s only for one week. I guess i’ll just do some volunteering and work.

@lexluthor
ok, but there are also underqualified (according to you, but I think they’re all qualified even though some applicant’s scores look mediocre) asians and whites that get in… less than hispanics, but that’s because they are underrepresented. You can’t really change how college admissions officers think. While their stats may look underqualified, maybe that hispanic was compared to a white or asian with the same level of qualification and given the spot because they are underrepresented. You don’t really know that, but you do sound bitter over the fact that affirmative action has a role in mit acceptance. I’m sure they would not accept a person, white, asian, hispanic, african american, native american, etc. that isn’t qualified (according to mit standards).

@hpaero1
yeeeeah I’m on spring break :stuck_out_tongue: lol. Oh wow well good luck!! :slight_smile: lol.

How am I more qualified than you? Lol. Believe me you are more qualified than me lol.
Oh my backup is a medical internship about the same days as MITES.
And my backup backup is taking college courses at a nearby university lol. Or I can probably do both the internship & the courses lol.

Okay, this might sound really stupid, but I still want to ask it.

I applied to a lot of summer programs. SSP, WTP, and MITES. Since there application essays were all kinda the same, I reused some of my essays and just changed the name of the program.

However, I think I checked share my application with SSP and WTP in the MITES application. Will they kill me because they saw I reused some of my essays once they share the applications?

@Robert
oh and you get back to school on monday?
haha thanks =) good luck to you too!

Ummmm, you seem to have better stats lol
oh yeah and my grades just got worse this grading period. esp chem… ahh well i’m doing as much as i can. I wish one day was like…35 hours long lol so much more time to do extra things and then have enough time to study/do homework. Too bad it’s not possible

Ohh medical internship?? that’s still great =D
it’s a good backup.
haha your backup backup is also good lol
maybe i’ll do the same (the courses thing) at the comm. college dunno

@Sadahila
I don’t think they would kill you. :smiley: I think it’s completely fine, but it may be a bit weird if they got two essays for the same topic (if it was the same).

@hpaero1 yeeah i go back on monday, ugh, i dont wanna go back lol. i haven’t even started my homework :O

post yur stats!! :stuck_out_tongue: lol. or message them to me, i dont want anyone to see mine, so i’ll message you mine haha. cause honestly yurs are better lol. i know! a 35 hour day would be amazing! :slight_smile: like a saturday! time for relaxing, homework, and other stuff lol.

well thats what i did last summer, i took two college courses, but ehh i didnt really benefit from them. && last year i turned down the medical internship :open_mouth: haha.

O reallyyyyyyy
