MITES 2010 Information & Discussion

Yes, my S received the rejection letter yesterday. We are in the L.A. area.

Congratulations to all that were accepted!

I would have wished to join you guys, but I got my rejection letter today, oh well more time to study during summer for me :stuck_out_tongue: But I hope all of you have an awesome time, best of luck! I bet you guys deserve…and now time to worry about MIT applications for next year, at least for me.

@kere
Paledot and I are from Florida. put our states on an updated list.

How can you have a 6.5 GPA? that’s quite impossible on a 5.0 scale

@xephyr417: AP Comp Sci, although moved beyond what is taught in the classroom.

Is anyone else having conflicting dates between final exams and MITES?

okay so im from GA and I still don’t have a letter…but then again I am in south GA… (tear)
congrats to all who made it!
@kere and college-goer: I hope I can make it with you… I mean yall =]
@robert18: how was the science fair??

How’d you do on all your 10 APs and what APs did you take? and your accepted, right? and btw you seem like a freakin genius :slight_smile: i’ve only taken 8 :(

yup…i’ve made a decision I have no hope lol
our school only offers 6 APs!! 2 we have two that are offered junior year and the rest senior year

Hello everyone! I was accepted to MITES 2010. I was also accepted to YESS. :smiley: So…I’m really indecisive. I’m leaning towards YESS, it sounds better suited for me. I have talked to past MITES students, one of them being my best friend, and she said it wasn’t actually all it was built up to be…so I don’t know. I’m not saying anything bad about MITES, because I haven’t had a first-hand experience, but I don’t know what to do?!?

My two friends from texas were rejected…
Me and my teacher thought for sure one would get in… this really suck.

@writergrl94, DON’TTTTTTTTTTTT!!! as someone said in a previous reply, MIT undergraduate accepts more than 80 boys and girls. so please don’t give up. you are a minority which means you probably have a better chance thatn the others of getting into MIT. just DON’T GIVE UP. you might have a chance! dont be afraid of rejection. so I hope you apply to MIT next year.

@guezmike

hey i run cross country and track too! maybe we can find some really cool place to run while we’re there. MIT is like right next a body pf water. like a harbor or something. ad i wrote like two of my essays about that. running is awesome :)

Sorry guys if I sounded bitter on my last post. I hope all of you that got accepted the best of luck and take full advantage of your opportunity. Rejection isn’t as bad as people seem to make it.

rejected. my summer plan is now in shambles. yay.

i wish it were more merit based.

edit: meaning that my parents both having a degree (my mom having 3) and high total income prolly made them reject me.

or maybe it was cuz i just suck.

im taking this really badly.

@iheartcalculus
I think we’re really going to get along! are u a guy or a girl? i cant really tell. lol and what are your cross country times and what do u run track? I lvoe running so much! we should definately get some runs in together over there :)

and ive taken 10 APs. 7 are this year (Chemistry, Environmental, Cal AB, Statistics, English Language, Spanish Language and US History) Thhe last 3 are REQUIRED for juniors in my school. -_- its a stupid system but whatever. AP chemistry is not given in my school but i managed to get my school to buy me the textbook and ive been self studying it in order to take the exam in May. The other 3 ar enormal Ap classes that i work in. I took AP world freshman year becuz its mandatory. got a 3, dont know how i dislike history. Last year i took ap european history (again mandatory, dont know how i got a 3) but i also took Ap biology which i loved and got a 5 :slight_smile: best class ever.

and lmao, im not really a genius. I look like a superhuman in my school because everyone is lazy and the Ap classes are a joke and there are really low passing ratings but I am doing what i have to slowly but surely. I know how to work the system. Ive been reinforcing my Ap exams with the equivalent classes in my community college so it prepares me for the exams becuz the teachers in my school are mediocre at best. Especially for calculus.

Im excited for Ap exams! mostly becuz after Ap exams im done for the year :)

ummm… lastly. 6.5 gpa is completely possible in my school system. Here we have dual enrollment which we take college classes while in high school. Each dual enrollment class adds a 6 to your weighted GPA and every Ap class adds a 6 to your GPA as well. Now, the way u surpass 6.0 is when you reach your maximum 24 high school credits and your maximum 60 credits in college your GPA starts to compound. So you continue adding points from extra classes but u continue diving by the same number. SO your gpa surpasses 6.0. As for my school which is a middle/high school. We start taking Biology and algebra 1 in eight grade so that we can quickly reach that 24 credit cap to start the compounding of our GPAs.

so thats how that works. hopoe i was help :)

and for those going to MITES this summer cant wait to see you there!!! im so excited.

i wonder if IB screwed me over

xephyr417 - sorry that you did not get in. What were your stats? Where are you from?

I am in MO and have not received a decision from MITES.

Congratulations to all who have been accepted to the MITES '10

@xephyr417
i guess merit-based would be fine.
and the reason why i think i got in was not because of my family’s income level (because it’s middle class) but somehow i showed my love of science and engineering and they saw that.

that’s the scary thing about MITES, there’s no guaranteed formula on how to get in. i for sure thought they were going to reject me, but they didn’t, all i can say is to make sure your son shows a devout interest in science and math in his essays because the essays and the recs are really the only way that MITES can see you as a person and not just a name on an application.

also make sure his math and science grades are really good as well.
