MITES 2013 Discussion

I lost all hope for MITES :P

if I get in… I’m going to praise the MIT admission officers all day at the camp and ■■■■■ the RSI kids…

@Jhansen I haven’t played age of empires since I lived in Venezuela lol. If I manage to get my hands on that game, I’ll let you know.

@Alpha I think I would do the same…

9 days left, guys.

btw, when are you all going start studying for AP exams? Or have you already started? This is my first year taking APs, so I’m clueless.

I took the 2008 AP Chemistry exam yesterday and, without stupid mistakes, got a mid-range 4. So I think with some studying I’ll be able to get a 5 (hopefully). APUSH & AP L+C, however…

Hey Guys!

I have pretty much been stalking this thread for a couple weeks, and now that I just got on spring break (HEAVENS YEAH) I decided to join. I’m a junior in Georgia and I applied to MITES and if I get in, I just KNOW it’ll be life changing. YEEEEE. You all seem like amazing people that I want to get to know. Here are my stats, and a little bit about me, just to get introduced…

African American Male 16, both of my parents are from Nigeria (my name is Nigerian). I’m in a pretty small school right now about 900 kids.
I’ve been playing Tennis for 4 years, Cross Country for 3 and just started Soccer (We’re undefeated, Region Champs and ranked in the state OH YUHHH) this year

GPA - 4.0 (unweighted) or 99.342 on a 100 point scale
Rank - 1 out of 187
PSAT - 209
SAT - Submitted a 2010 from last for MITES but took it this March and raised it to a 2110 (eh), 2120 if you super score (730 in Math Yaaahhhh)

CLASSES
I’ve previously taken 2 AP Classes, made a 4 and a 5 in Gov. and World History respectively
Currently taking 5 AP’s (Aiieeeee!) including APUSH, Econ (Macro&Micro), Stat, Lang and Physics B. Then I have Accelerated Math III (Precalc) and Yearbook

OTHER
I just this week got elected as Student Body President (YEEEE) I’m currently Junior Council President - basically we plan prom (13 DAYS GAHHHH) - Junior Prom Court (this was actually surprising) - Executive Council - Chemistry Club -FLAIR - NHS - etc, etc

I’m so excited to get to talk with you guys ahhhh! (I’m kind of crazy)

We got another lurker lol.

Nice meeting you Waffles. Welcome to the thread of anxious teenagers waiting for a response xD. It is quite a nice environment here, great people I must say; I feel more comfortable with everyone in this thread than with the people at my school xD.

@lldm21 I usually use Spring Break as a massive cramming session where I read for all AP exams I feel weak in. This year, my weaknesses are AP L+C and AP Stats. I hate the latter, and feel like I have a guaranteed four for AP L+C unless I get 8’s or 9’s on my essays (which I very much doubt will occur). Curious question, because it has been bothering for too long already, you CC name is it IL or II or LI or LL?!?!?!?! It’s a small disturbance in the back of my head that just grow Dx.

California (Bay Area) 1.5-Generation Korean kid here xD

I’ve been lurking for the past week (SPRING BREAK 2013!!!) on this thread and I’m pretty excited to meet everyone if I’m fortunate enough to get accepted to MITES!!

DUCK AND COVER: THEY’RE COMING!!!11

For some reason, the fact that all of these the lurkers are beginning to come out of the shadows reminds me of that final fight scene in the movie Legion, when everybody is inside of the house getting ready to gun down the advancing evil guys from outside.

(Disclaimer: I could be totally remembering this wrong; I’ve only seen the movie twice, and both times were close to its release date.)

…anyway. Welcome to the thread, guys xD!

@Ozzy: I’m screwed for AP L&C. We just started doing AP stuff on a regular basis last week. We’ve done maybe 3 or 4 timed essays all year, and we’ve done ~3 MC passages. We also spent (literally) all of Q3 writing one essay, and then my teacher thought it would be a good idea to conference with each person (there’s 15-20 of us) on our essays during class, each meeting lasting anywhere from 5-40 minutes, meaning we had about one week’s worth of study halls during class, because she didn’t actually give us anything to do while she was talking with other kids.

We’re all going to get 2’s and 1’s.

@lldm21 I feel you pain, in a way. Our AP teacher is new, the one my school had last year was transferred but she had 80%+ passing rate. However she has tried to teach us. She isn’t the best, but I will admit I have faith in her. All we’ve been doing this year is take note (well the class, I literally sleep when she does that), and AP MC’s and Essays but last a month on each because she wants to go over almost every detail possible testing on each mock. She is getting faster and is timing us a lot lately 0.o. Just practice your writing and take a couple of MC’s on your own (You can even use the SAT preparation book as practice, the one by the Collegeboard). To pass the AP exam all you need is two 5’s and a 6 in the essays, and a 50% on your MC. Tha’s a three of course. But don’t aim for passing, aim to improve your writing to the 9 level and understand English better (that will get you a much higher score and prepare you for college essays! xD).

Are there too many parentheses?

@Lee and @Waffles Welcome. :slight_smile: Nice stats!

I am just as excited to meet you both.

@Ozzy: Yeah, my teacher was given the course two weeks prior to school starting because the usual teacher was getting a lot of surgeries on her spine.

I do not know how to do that, though :/. My English teachers have all enjoyed my style of writing, so they haven’t really told me how to improve >.<. My writing is definitely not 9-caliber, though, and I don’t think I can get it to that level in 30ish days xD. &, no, not too many parentheses :p

If I get accepted… I will touch myself.

If not, I will still do so, but with slightly less enthusiasm.

So about this blog… lol

ahahaha, I love you guys

But yeah, @Ozzy and @lldm21 I’m having the same problem. Some of my AP teachers are absolutely outstanding but then some of my teachers haven’t been doing anything all year, and have low pass rates… I’ll definitely be doing a bunch of self-studying, I already have a couple AP books :D

@lldm21 Easy, each years essays topics are online with sample responses. Look up the rubric used specifically to grade each essay and compare your writing to those in the sample essays. Do not emphasize how good your essay is, emphasize how well it discusses the given argument. Because you may have a perfect essay, but for the wrong prompt lol.

@Rivs Get your A** to tumblr right now and make a blog, start posting all the stuff that has shown up through this thread XD

@Sky360: Haha, I am honored, that actually means something to me. You and anyone else may contact me at any time; PMs are fine if you want to go that way. Also, thanks! I’d hope to see you there as well!

@Hoctopi: I am conference 5A in UIL. Also, I’m going to Baylor as well! I am in 5 events for Region (NS/Math/Calc/Sci/CS.) That might make me identifiable… oh well. Since you’re doing science, you’ll see me there. I don’t know if you have heard of my name before. I don’t want to give out too much information, but I think that all the UIL kids on here should talk to each other and see where we are. I’m glad to see people here doing it! Good luck at Region by the way!

I’m pretty confident that I’ll score at least a 4 in AP Language, but I am super stressed about AP Bio. We haven’t really learned anything in that class, and I don’t have a lot of time for self study because I’m desperately trying to finish my online AP Calc course before the exam.

Deciding to take an online math course is the worst academic decision I’ve ever made D:

But for whomever (whoever?) was freaking out about the AP Language exam, the best thing to do is a lot of timed writing. Then go back to the rubric and grade it harshly. My teacher has us write a timed writing once or twice a week, and my scores have gone from 5s and 6s to 8s and 9s purely from practice. My teacher doesn’t write many comments on our papers.

So are any of you overextended right now? I literally have every weekend and weekday booked for the next 7 weeks D:

@Ozzy, Lily: Gotcha. Thanks :).

@Lily: What in the world are you doing?

@Lovely I wish I was overextended actually, kinda miss it. I was overextended until last week, and just like you I had every week (more weekends that weeks) booked since January. Now it feels so chill and relaxed it kinda bores me lol. Yes I want more stress, I know I am not busy when I can play video games and over-think every detail of my life, which I’ve been doing this week lol.

@lldm21 Welcome :D!

@lldm21: My school musical is approaching, meaning I have rehearsal three to six times a week until the show. I also have some random things, like a few doctor’s appointments and a CPR class and tutoring, and then I have the ACT this month and SAT/AP Exams/Finals next month. Add in youth group, church, and trying to finish the online calc class I’m behind in, and it all kind of makes me want to cry.

@Ozzy: Hahaha, I know what you mean! I tell myself every year that I will limit my commitments so I don’t stress so much, and then I get bored and sign up for more things.
