MITES / MOSTEC 2020

Like I said before, it’s a circus and we’re the clowns.

I agree that the delay is bit painful, but I am more than thankful that there is a program that is even available given COVID situation with most cancelling altogether.

Yeah I know that the other programs that I was looking at just cancelled entirely. At least we have something to look forward to later this month.

Not really. Personally, I’m not looking forward to that rejection letter.

i agree. we should be happy that 1. we got an update (even if it wasn’t exactly what we wanted) and 2. some of us will be able to take part in mostec over the summer. even if you don’t think you’re going to get in, it is a lot more helpful to be hopeful than absolutely pessimistic.

What are y’all’s stats?

1350 sat - (I’ve only taken it once during my sophomore year, covid19 screwed me over this year)

2 in my class out of 180

4.875 weighted gpa (Our school doesn’t give us an unweighted gpa but last time I calculated it I think it was 3.95)

I’ve taken AP CS Principles and CSA (4 on both)
This year I’m taking AP Lang, AP Calc AB, AP Psych, AP Bio and APUSH
Next year I’m taking AP Lit, AP Statistics, AP Calc BC, AP Physics and AP Govt,

I’m not proud of my stats but I also don’t put a whole lot of focus on to school, most of my effort goes in to my hobby projects so I just have to hope that colleges don’t judge me for my stats and they can see that I truly have a passion for stem.

I’ll follow your format johnpayne ahhahah
1520 SAT
800 Math 2

1 out of 475

4.424 weighted

AP Calc AB - 5
AP Physics 1 - 4
AP Psychology - 5

This year I’m taking: AP Lang, AP Physics C, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, APUSH, and AP Calc BC
Next year: AP Lit, AP Gov, AP Stats, AP Macro/Microecon, AP Spanish, AP CompSci A

Also wow, how is your GPA so high? For us, that’s impossible because of the required non AP courses we have to take + language course prerequisites.

Our school inflates our gpa, AP courses are weighted as 5.333 honors classes are 5.0 and college bound are 4.667 (and I’m not even sure about that, our school is so weird about grades).

35 ACT
1490 PSAT
800 math II and 800 chem
school doesn’t rank us rip
4.84 weighted (cp 4.0, honors 4.8, ap 5.0), 4.0 unweighted

bc calc 5

last year: bc calc
this year: apush, ap lang, ap chem, ap stats, multivariable calc
next year: ap bio, ap physics, ap latin, linear algebra, diff eq, comp sci principles

my ec’s are eh though so we’ll see

1560 SAT/36 ACT
800 Math 2
We don’t do class rank
5.29W/4.0UW (CP 4.0, AA/Honors 5.0, AP 6.0)

Sophomore APs:
AP Stats (5)
APUSH (5)

Junior APs:
AP Calc BC
AP CSA
AP Lang
AP Econ (micro and macro)
AP Physics C (mech and e and m)
AP Chem

I do+lead a couple ECs, but my essay writing skills are bad, so even though I am genuinely passionate about every single one of my ECs, idk if the admissions people will be able to see that

Honestly I am sick of trying to impress admissions officers. I gave that up a long time ago. Your stats all sound great. College admissions and admissions in general has become extremely competitive. I doubt that my scores or class rank alone will even matter.

@corcuscant im planning on doing Multivariable Calc next year since I’m doing Calc BC right now. How was it? Since the AP Curriculum was cut down, we aren’t going to do polar stuff. Is that necessary in Multivariable? We were a little ahead of what college board used as the cur off and we almost finished the chapter before polar stuff. I’m doing multivariable calculus first semester and Linear Algebra and Diff EQ second semester next year and wanted to know how I’ll do if BC was cut down. Since I’m one of the few non-seniors in the class (there’s 5 juniors, 3 sophomore, 1 freshman and the rest are seniors) the teacher said that they’ll teach us the remainder of BC once the seniors graduate and are gone

Do y’all do any math/phys/cs/bio/etc. olympiads?

@Konohakatu u learn polar beforehand and everything else. you’re gonna do cylindrical and spherical coordinate stuff which is polar but 3d. also, internalize what a cross product and dot product are they are very important. i took the cty course and it was honestly very ok. as long as bc is going well, it will be no problem.

@corcuscant ok thank you so much!

Are results ever going to be released?

lol since we’re doing stats : african american girl

35 ACT (35 M, 35 S, 35 R, 36W)
1540 SAT (800 M 740 EBRW)
W Gpa: 4.531
top5% of 570

freshman year:
AP Calc AB
AP Calc BC (5 and 5 on AB subscore)

sophomore year:
Calculus III @ university
Differential Equations @ university
AP Biology
AP Physics C: Mechanics
AP World History

junior year(currently):
AP Environmental Science
AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
AP Statistics
Computer Science
AP English Lang, AP Spanish Lang, AP US history, AP Seminar

although stats aren’t the most important for this program.

it’s so funny everybody has straight insane stats compared to the regular school population what even is this

Yeah, I mean it makes sense though, your typical school student doesn’t spend their time browsing college confidential, let alone apply for an MIT summer program for minorities.
