Mitte HOnors?

Hey,

I just finished my first semester at IU. I’m a freshman DA, and I finished the semester with a 3.8.

Now I’m looking to apply to Hutton Honors, and Mitte Honors.

I know I’ll get into Hutton but I have a question about Mitte.

Mitte’s minimum requirement GPA is 3.7. Since I meet that requirement, am I pretty much in? or is this just a requirement to get considered?

Thanks

bulls365,

Congrats on finishing your first semester with a great GPA!

My son is also a freshman DA and he says that a 3.7 is not a guarantee of admission to Mitte, according to his Kelley counselor. I imagine that it is a minimum benchmark, something the school uses to discourage those with lower GPAs from applying.

Check the CC archives for student experiences. I believe a couple of students on this board who applied last year got their answers this past summer.

yeah, I’ve been wondering the same thing as bulls, and I have a 3.8 also.

on another note, a few weeks ago I was stupid, messed up and got a drinking ticket. I’m wondering how significantly this’ll affect my chances at getting into the program.

I don’t think you have to disclose it, considering this process is a lot different than the actual college admission process, so hopefully it won’t affect anything.

I currently have a 3.55, hopefully above a 3.7 after second semester… from anyone that knows, do I have a chance if I don’t quite make it? Maybe a high 3.6?

Dougdon- are you in the Hutton Honors program? Do you have solid activities outside of academia? These are all factors that could help you. Also, I am not sure on this, but an upward trend in grades can’t hurt.

What I was hearing, 3.7 was pretty much the shoe in GPA for the 2010 class.

I know one person who didn’t make it above a 3.7, since he didn’t even write an essay… but other then that, your extras don’t count for a lot.

Its funny they say the GPA doesn’t matter, but in reality, if you have a 3.8 you are almost GUARANTEED admission. Your extras will only matter if your borderline 3.7.

It sucks that they said “3.5” last year and then pulled the rug out and did a 3.7 GPA cut line, but whatever, after Sophomore Block, I’m happy im not in Mitte.

Sam,

I’m curious about what you mean: “but whatever, after Sophomore Block, I’m happy im not in Mitte.” ?

My son is thinking about doing sophomore block next year. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on it. Your above comment leads me to believe that is was harder than you thought it would be.

Hello,

Well, to be honest, when I signed up for sophomore block, I had no clue the workload would be “intense”, just the thought of going to India made me salivate.

What ends up happening is that the courses in themselves are not “hard”. Obviously, harder then your freshman classes, but not hard. My fellow peers are what made it “time consuming”.

I honestly believe that most (4/5+) of Sophomore block kids have a work ethic that’s ridiculously insane enough for IVY league schools.

For examples: Projects that would take at max 1-2 hours drag out for 5 hours due to the need to “triple check” projects/papers. Which is fine for most people in sophomore block, since they do care a lot about their GPA, and as a result, most group projects will earn an A or higher.

HOWEVER, this comes at a HUGE time commitment. Early on, it is manageable but as you get into October/November, you WILL find yourself doing more academic work then a FULL WORK DAY. At least 2+ days a week, I find found myself in the library doing group work till 8-9 PM. Sometimes we hit the 11 PM mark, and we then are forced to disband due to the bus schedule (thank god).

I SLACKED on my extra-curricular (and feel horrible) due to Soph block just SNATCHING your time away. My social life took a pitfall (outside of soph block), my network shrunk, and I had to quit two organizations in which I was an officer in.

I am currently an exec board member on IUSA, and I have done didly SQUAT this year, and feel horrible about it (will change it this semester).

Just shows that you better not do anything this semester other then soph block or you will have time conflicts.

If your son is use to working his butt off, by all means tell him to sign up. The trip IS an experience of a lifetime.

I wouldn’t recommend soph block for people who are smart, but don’t work hard (the slackers).

Most of the people in Soph Block are quiet nice, however, their personality is based more on academics (duh). Many don’t go out on the weekends to party. A few do, and I wonder how they got by. We had a few greek members, and all of them were very nice, “chill” people to hang out with. I made a few friends from these classes. However, some of them, I would never find myself hanging out with them.

Finally, if you take sophomore block, you will have an awesome trip and awesome finals week (1 real final). I cannot describe in words how fun the 10 days were… just the days before and after = :frowning: .

Ironically, I put in more hours of work on Soph Block then my freshman year combined and I still got a lower GPA. Proves that hard work does not equal good grades.

Time to take some blow off classes next semester! (Self Defense, Fencing, singing, etc…)

To the OP, sorry for hijacking your thread on Mitte. I’ll try to bring it back on topic.

To dammitsam and any others ‘in the know’, would it be safe to say that Mitte students will have the same kind of intense academic experience as that described for Sophomore Block? Do we have any Mitte students on this board?

Thanks!

I bet Mitte is pretty intense. Here are pictures and resumes of people in the investment banking workshop, class of 2009 and other years. Some very high achievers with lots of international experiences compared to most kids.
