Mixed up Football and Soccer in my Common App -- should I notify Adcom Officers?

Hi guys,

In my country, we call soccer “football”. I remembered to put it as “soccer” in the Activities section. But for the Additional Info section, I brought the sport several times, but mentioned it as “football”… I’m afraid that would confuse the admissions officers. Should I email in to notify them of my mix-up? Thanks

I don’t think that’s necessary. They’ll know what country you’re from (as per the common app) and I think they’ll be able to figure it out.

I think you should clarify it as “soccer” as I don’t think AO would know “football” is “soccer”, they would think you were providing false information.

Among educated people it is widely known that outside of the U.S. soccer is universally known as football. I see no need to clarify.

  1. They will most likely infer you are in soccer.
  2. It doesn't matter which sport you play unless you are playing for the school.

@GoTiger2000 If the admissions committee is aware that OP is an international student in a country that refers to soccer as ‘football,’ I think they’ll be able to put two and two together.

The difference in terms will not pose any confusion for the admissions committee. They commonly see soccer called “football” by internationals and they will recognize by your country of origin what sport you are referring to.
