MM in Music Theatre

Has anyone heard anything about this program?? I am currently a 3rd year (junior) BMus major at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. I am looking at Oklahoma City, Arizona State, and the University of Montana for Music Theatre grad school. If you have any comments about the program or the school itself (housing, campus, nightlife, etc.) please let me know! =) Thank you!

Kati,

your best bet for info on housing, campus, is to review some of the posts on this board and visit the website. I can’t really tell you much about the MM program itself.

In general OCU is a very credible program and a very new building on a nice campus.

Oklahoma City is not everyone’s cup of tea but I think it works well for those who are there. We always enjoy our visits. In general the MT and VP programs at OCU are mid-sized compared to others but I think everyone gets as much personal attention as they care to. In general it is what many might consider to be a small school with approx 2300-2400 total undergrad and grad students

There is some posting for Arizona; U of Montana is a new one on me.

Good Luck!

WMonMTDad,

thanks for the info, wh do you say “Oklahoma City is not everyone’s cup of tea but I think it works well for those who are there” ?

Also, where did you find posting for Arizona U? There was nothing under Musical Theatre Schools, and nor was Montana. I think this might be because they don’t have music theatre undergrad programs.

katip…there is a forum for U of Arizona’s MT program right here at the top of the MT Forum. Here is the link to it:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-arizona-mt/

However, there is very little discussion on it regarding the graduate program.

There is not, however, a forum for Montana. As it is a graduate only program and there is very little discussion on this forum of graduate MT programs (and there are not many graduate MT programs in the first place), there is not a separate forum for that school. You could start a thread about it on the main MT Forum, if you would like.

PS…U of Arizona does indeed have an undergraduate BFA in MT program and there is LOTS of discussion about it on the UArizona MT Forum that I linked you to above.

soozievt,

thanks for the info, but I actually was talking abut Arizona State University, not the University of Arizona. There is a forum for UA, but not for ASU.

Katip,
Ah, yes, in the first post, you did say Arizona State…but when I posted yesterday, I just read you most recent post (I tend to look at any new posts that go up each day) and there you said Arizona U and so I just went by that…sorry!

There is not a lot about grad MT programs on these forums, as there are not a lot of grad MT programs in the first place. But keep asking…even on the general MT Forum.

soozievt, I noticed the lack of info! =( Which is why I’m trying to find out more! It’s probably going to be impossible for me to visit each of these schools, so the more I can learn from others, the better! Thanks for your help, and no problem! =)

Sorry, I just noticed you had posted another question. I really was speaking more about some of those “intangibles” and the rest of that post tried to speak to those sorts of things. OKC is not as big as some towns; some may not like the overall environment or ambience of the town. Those who are there obviously like it. It is first and foremost a music program. Very strong in regards to vocal performance.

I have no exposure to the MM program but I’ll comment on the BM program. I think the biggest weakness (and any weakness is relative) might be that the three components are not knit as tightly as I might prefer (as a parent looking in from the outside). The theater program is really distinct; MT does its own thing as far as the acting piece and for a program that grants the degree as a music degree that might raise a flag. Dance is also distinct and while you can and will have the chance to place into the same classes as dance majors, it also is a separate program and sometimes getting into the dance class you need might be a problem as you move up.

I don’t by any means want to sound negative because its not. S is very happy there. I merely look at the administrative structure and see some things that I believe might make for an even stronger program.

There are other OCU parents and students that post that ought to be able to give some insights as well.

Sorry I missed the distinction about UAz and ASU.

soozievt is a pro at all this and keeping it straight!!!
