Well…that’s stupid. But if you LOVE that pink…I’m betting you can find it on sale too!
The pink arrived; I tried it on; it fits well (as I knew it would – that size and that brand work very well on me); and I’ve already packed it up to go back.
The bride told me today that her mother has homed in on something – a long skirt and a matching top with three-quarter sleeves. Bride is sending me a picture of it. I don’t expect to want to wear the same type dress at all, but at least it will give me some idea of what I should be doing.
OMG! this thread has been going on for a couple of months and I’m only finding it now??? Ever since CC changed the format of the Forum, which I know was a couple of years ago, I feel as if I’m not really “in the know.” I bookmarked my favorite threads a while ago and then never look at the general forum page. Anyway, I digress …
I’m the MOB; September 23rd at a camp on an island in NH. It’s a weekend event, Friday - Sunday. Weather permitting, the ceremony is at the outdoor chapel at 4:30 PM; dinner in the dining hall; dancing in the lodge. (It’s run as a family camp in the summer; we’ve been going for 25 years.)
Re: dresses – I’m looking for short since I figure D’s dress dragging in the dirt is enough. Royal blue is often my go-to color, but that’s the color of bridesmaids dresses. I’m actually looking for navy since I won’t wear black and anything like ivory/blush is too pale for me. There are fewer short options than long, it seems. Also, I won’t go to a bridal salon to look … D just wants me to be comfortable.
Here’s one I liked a lot when I saw it online. I’ve since returned it because (1) I’m not 5’10 or more like the model, so it hits me closer to my ankles and looks odd/dowdy – and would have to be shortened at the waist due to the scalloped hem and (2) it’s heavy – surprisingly so. If it wasn’t so heavy, I would have considered getting it shortened.

I ordered, tried and returned 4 Alex Evening dresses. Some shed sequins like crazy and none of the styling did anything for me. More recently I’ve hit on Lauren Ralph Lauren dresses – I’ve always been more of a tailored/classic style person. I have several already and several more on order. One will have to work because, honestly – I’m running out of patience with the whole process.
It never occurred to me to worry about how anything sparkly on the dress will appear in photos – I’ll have D check with the photographer. I’ve been more concerned with how my “golf tan” will play out …
I was just looking at that dress through the Anthropologie site, @CBBBlinker , and thinking how pretty it is. Too bad about the length IRL: I love tea length, personally.
Your venue sounds wonderful, just the kind of thing I would like. But it doesn’t sound like a place for sequins and bling.
I love this dress–which is actually silk–in both colors.

And this one, also silk:

Obviously, I am not a tailored type. Has anyone ever ordered anything from Stylewe?
@CBBBlinker: I might be wearing this one, from Ralph Lauren: https://www.macys.com/shop/product/lauren-ralph-lauren-petite-georgette-overlay-shift-dress?ID=4485619&CategoryID=55596&selectedSize=#fn=SIZE%3DWOMEN_PETITE_SIZE_T%3A2P, PS%26BRAND%3DLauren Ralph Lauren%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D83%26ruleId%3D78|BS|BA%26slotId%3D4
But consider Aidan Mattox as well – for example, http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/aidan-mattox-illusion-mesh-sheath-dress/4468828?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=NAVY
I really like the Aidan Mattox dress. The others are pretty as well but I’m more a tailored person.
@VeryHappy – I did actually read through the entire thread, clicking on all the dress links, so I saw that Ralph Lauren dress may work for you. Not so much my style, though. I will check out Aidan Mattox, however.
@Consolation – Initially I was looking for tea length. Not all that many choices, and almost all would have to be shortened to avoid the dreaded “dowdy.” (I’m 5’6", so not super short, but, as I said above, I’m not model tall, either.) The 2 silk dresses you linked to are pretty; just not for me. I’m not looking at dresses with a lot of bling, but, IMO, a little sparkle is OK so I don’t look like just another guest.
Re: StyleWe - my sister ordered dresses for herself and my niece and the site seemed very easy to manage. The dresses were pretty true to the pictures and the return was easy, but not prepaid for those who like to order a lot of dresses and return. It’s one of the reasons I tend to oder from sites that have brick and mortar stores so I can avoid the return fees.
I like the color of this dress:

Not in love with the price…
Ooh, pretty dress BB! Very much my style but ouch on the price. I just couldn’t.
Good news for me, they’ve sold out of my size.
^ Bunsen, I tried (and liked =) this dress…fits beautifully, hangs great and hides a lot of sins. And is great for traveling. Salesperson told me to go smaller than my normal size with this brand and she was right. Alas, the bride didn’t care for it…
You gotta do what you gotta do… There are plenty of dresses… There is only one bride.
Is this a new thing to have the bride okay the MOB or MOG dresses? I’ve seen it mentioned many times here and on the general wedding thread. I can’t fathom expressing any opinion to my own mother or MIL back in the day, or me caring really, or them even asking. :-??
I was a guest at a wedding this weekend. The MOB wore navy blue … surprise, surprise. The dress was long, cold-shoulder style and sparkly, which seemed more glitter sparkly than sequins, but I didn’t see it close enough to tell for sure. I know the cold shoulder look is trendy now, and she had good shoulders for it, but I couldn’t help wondering if she would regret her decision when she looks at the pictures in a few years. There are so many styles, many of them already linked to, that are more timeless.
Completely agree about fad styles and pictures. Off the shoulder - I gt that. Audrey Hepburn-ish. But holey shoulders… Not my cup of tea. Awkward Family Photos, anyone?
I automatically veto any dresses that are “cold shoulder.” I agree that it’s a fad, and I think a stupid one at that.
ETA: I ordered a Komarov dress, and sort of liked it. It didn’t suit me, but it was an interesting variation on the standard.
I’ve never seen a Komarov dress IRL, but they tend to be my favorites of the “official” MOB/MOG dresses.
@chocchipcookie had some great sites…should look through the archives!
Ive looked at. Lot of dresses too…and I really don’t feel any kind of print will be right for our wedding. Some of these are nice…but I’m looking for a solid color.
This is really pretty.

That dress would be great for our wedding except…that is the color the bridesmaids are wearing.
