Future DIL has requested her Mom and I wear something in the burgundy/plum palette. She also prefers we wear floor length. Wedding is next September. I like this one. I started a Pinterest page to keep track of the dresses I like. http://www.neimanmarcus.com/Parker-Black-Andrea-One-Shoulder-Column-Evening-Gown/prod202680069/p.prod?ecid=NMCS__GooglePLA&utm_medium=CSE&utm_source=NMCS__GooglePLA&utm_campaign=ParkerBlack
Has anyone worn this brand? I might order it but according to the “modern” size chart my bust is one size, my waist Another and my hips a third size.
Late to the party here but great choices in dresses thumpe1 and oldfort. Mom60, I like that dress also.
Thumper1 I agree with the other posters that a silver strappy sandal is the way to go and outstanding earrings.
Deb 22, love that corsage… .very simple and classy.
That’s a pretty dress though I think the dropped shoulder would drive me crazy. I’m guessing you can ignore the waist measurement. I’ve got the same problem, not enough bosom for the rest of me. I guess I need to go back to nursing babies! LOL.
I kind of wonder why you and MOB need to wear the same color palette. Wouldn’t you be better off wearing different colors, as long as you don’t clash?
I like the Parker dress, but I agree the one shoulder would bother me as I need regular bra. I do like Parker dresses. I’m also partial to the colors in the plum/purple palette. I wore a plum/eggplant silk suit to my sons Bar Mitzvah. I’ll be wearing a plum velvet tunic to an upcoming event. I think the color looks good on almost all people. That said, I would think any medium to dark blue would blend in well.
I would suggest getting yourself to a department store again to try on different dresses. The size measurements on those charts are…well…garbage…because a lot depends on the style of the dress, the cut, the fabric, etc.
According to those charts, there was NO way my hips would fit into a size 10 dress (I wear an Ann Taylor Loft 6…so it’s not like I’m huge).
Well…the dress I bought was a 10 P that needed to be taken in about 1 1/2 inches in the torso on each side. I found that an 8p fit me perfectly…even the sheath models. Some size 8 regular fit well too.
So…go and try dresses on…or have some shipped to your house. Write down what fits for each designer…and the style of the dress.
I normally would never try on a one shoulder dress nor would I reach for a long dress. When I narrowed my search engine down to color the pickings are slim. My first choice would be a sheath style as that works best with my body. I love the shape of the dress @oldfort ordered. This one shoulder dress is in the color palette and I think it is pretty. My bust is pretty small so I don’t need to worry about wearing a supportive bra.
@oldfort- I don’t know why she wants us in the same palette. I love her but I was surprised that she had such strong opinions. I figured I would look for a dress I liked and see what she thought of it. We have 11 months and things could change.
@thumper1 - at some point I am going to go to LA or San Francisco and look with a couple of friends with good taste. I have a Nordstrom in town but the selection isn’t large. The only reason I’m beginning to look is that several people who are in the fashion business have suggested I look now for that color as it is a fall color. I know sizing is all over the map. You really need to be able to try things on. The downside to ordering online is that you don’t have the next size up or down at your fingertips like you would in person.
Well…I didn’t have the next size down available in the dress I bought…BUT…I had an awesome alterations person at the main Lord and Taylor store in NYC who made the dress just right…and I mean just right. Mine were side seam alterations…but the cost was…$25 for the alterations! Amazing!
Make sure you look through the dress selections online carefully. Some come in many colors…many.
Mom60 I am curious, what color are the bridesmaids wearing?
@tx5athome - the bridesmaids are wearing navy. Which is the color I would have chosen for myself. I dont wear a lot of color. Most of my closet is grey, white, navy, black and chocolate brown. I sometimes wear burgundy but not as a dress. I’m happy that the color palette she is suggesting will look good on me. Just it’s outside my normal box. My kids and future DIL all kid me about my limited color palette.
@mom60, I agree with your friend about shopping now for fall dresses. My S is getting married in early November and I started looking for a dress in August. The stores were just getting their fall dresses in. It was October before the best selection was in the stores.
@mom60 that dress is stunning!
There should be a federal law that says “bridesmaids shall not wear navy as that color looks best on the moms of the happy couple.”
I really like that one!!! ^^^
Yup - I may be wearing blue. Blue should be reserved for MOG or MOB. We have enough moms here to vote that into law.
I have three nice navy dresses hanging in my closet…if anyone is interested. One is casual…and will be worn to the welcome party. The other two are gowns…one will get consigned…and I guess I should send the other one back to my friend who sent it to me! If i hadn’t found the perfect lavender dress…I’d be wearing navy!
I am second-guessing my dress right now. I bought it specifically because it was casual enough (no bling) that I might be able to wear it again, but now I’m wondering if it is dressy enough for the MOG. There were two other contenders (also navy) that I’m thinking I should have considered, except I doubt I would ever have occasion to wear either again. Here I go overthinking again. Ugh.
How many times are you going to be MOG for your son? Let’s hope once, so why shouldn’t you have a fabulous dress you would only wear once? You need bling.
I have a very pretty cobalt blue velvet halter top dress my mother wore to the White House, probably when Jimmy Carter was president. It still looks remarkably stylish. It’s very simple, a little snug. I think it would be great for a kid’s wedding and would save looking for a dress! (I also have a really hideous yellow thing that also went to the White House - it looks like Johnson era. That just stays in my closet for sentimental reasons.
My relative was told the wedding gown she favors at BHLDN is about $1k plus alterations are generally another $500 or so. Yikes! I guess that’s supposedly the going rate these days? The tailor would add boning, cups/stuff so she could wear the gown w/o a bra and be able to bustle the gown for dancing.
