Of the options for D2’s wedding, I agree with your favorite at the top of the list. It’s my favorite of your picks.
For D1’s wedding, I like all the Sundance dresses and really like the one you already own. I like the fact that they are a little different than a lot of the lace overlay dresses which seem to be a little overdone right now.
@doschicos The lace overlay dresses are very popular and in some ways, feel less special because of that! But they are prevalent in the selections available! One reason I like the first dress for D2’s wedding is that it is not ordinary and isn’t lace. I hope it fits! Or if it is just a tad too tight, will inspire me to get on my treadmill!
In some ways, the Sundance dress I already bought NOT for my girls’ weddings, would work for D1’s daytime wedding in late May. So, I guess should not worry too much about that one as that could work, even though I didn’t pick it out for that purpose originally. It fits well. I have some heeled sandals that would work with it but might consider buying shoes that are not full sandals for it. I might still order a different dress to compare. It would save money to use the dress I already bought for my wardrobe. I do like the Sundance salmon colored dress for D1’s wedding in long sleeves and may consider trying that out.
I’m also open to not just feedback on the dresses I found online but any suggested ones people might have given the considerations that I listed in the first post.
I like all of these choices, soozie. And I think navy would be great with the burgundy/gold color scheme. Are you able to get to a Saks/Nordstom and try on the dresses?
@FallGirl Thanks. When I lived in VT, they didn’t have Saks or Nordstroms. I now live in Boston. There are Nordstrom stores in several suburbs. There is a Saks. My first choice dress for D2’s wedding was listed as available recently at a Nordstroms in the suburbs (I live in the city) but no longer is listed as such and so I ordered it online today.
I just ordered the first choice dress for D1’s wedding from Sundance online and I had a 10% code I applied due to a previous order and got it for $178.
I could consider going to Nordstroms, for example, in person, but would want to see if they had these particular dresses in stock in my size before going. Online is a bit more convenient actually and maybe due to my previous shopping habits from years of rural living. I don’t really want to shlep to a store in the suburbs if they only have one dress for me to try. But I have plenty of time for D2’s September wedding and so that is surely an option.
Not looking for a dress, but I do love the one you bought recently. I’m almost exactly your size and would wear it in a heartbeat if I could afford it. I’m not a fan of the style you like, but I do like that Nordstrom one with the sand/ivory. I think it would look great for a wedding, in any of the colors. My second favorite would be the “Benevolence” one from Sundance.
Have you considered getting a made to order dress from one of the Etsy shops? My D is doing that (though not Etsy) for prom because she is very busty but also slim and nothing off the rack fits. The prices are beyond reasonable. A fellow CC’er directed us to the “Renz Rags” shop on Etsy-MOB dresses look to be under $100. Can’t beat a custom fit.
I like the style you are going for with your picks so far. The very first Nordstrom beaded dress is my favorite by far. It is so unique, very stylish, but not over-the-top in any way at all. You will enjoy some compliments from others without looking like you are trying to upstage the bride.
If you do love the look of it when it arrives, but it doesn’t quite fit correctly, I would encourage you to at least get an opinion from a seamstress if it could be altered to fit you better.
I also like the last dress you have already purchased for yourself. It can be your “safety dress” while allowing you to also continue shopping for other possibilities.
You made some nice selections, but, obviously, you’ll have to see how they fit.
Just a word of caution about transparent bra straps - if you choose to go that route, be sure someone takes a photo of you in the dress with those straps. I tried them last year with the dress I wore to my son’s wedding, and the straps’ shininess was visible in photos. Fortunately, I tried this before I made any final decisions, so I was able to use a strapless bra instead. Fortunately for you, the color of your favorite choice may allow for wearing a similarly colored strapped bra without it looking out of place.
@sseamom The Nordstrom one in sand/ivory…I also like (though D2 doesn’t want me to wear Ivory…D1 would likely be fine with it…though I like it in navy/nude for D2’s affair).
The Benevolence Dress from Sundance…I really like too. It feels pricey ($378) to me for a daytime dress, but I’d consider it. The dress I bought recently for $178 from Sundance I like just as much and is similar in many ways though.
Haven’t considered the made to order dress at Etsy idea but thanks for mentioning. Maybe if nothing else works, I can look into that.
I don’t know Nordtrom’s and Saks policies but some stores (Anthro) will ship to you for free if they don’t have it in stock in your local store. Might be worth checking on.
Wearing the dress you already ordered would also give you the financial room to spend a little more for the dressier wedding.
@Onward Thanks for the suggestion of Modcloth. I checked the dresses in my size range. Most, but not all, were sleeveless. I haven’t totally ruled out sleeveless, but given both late May and late September, I’d likely prefer not to do sleeveless, in addition to not having nice arms.
“I am not opposed to lower necklines. I have plenty of V-necklines and wrap necklines and U-shaped neck line clothing. Actually, sometimes that type of look works well with a large bust and there is less pull across the front of the bust line. I’m not really self conscious in that way. (would not wear super low cut to a wedding of course)”
As someone who is reasonably busty, it is very easy for v necks and u necks to “photograph busty” and emphasize cleavage in an unflattering way. With the build you describe, I really would try to go with something that doesn’t show cleavage. I think you will be disappointed in how the pictures will make you look.
Gosh, @BunsenBurner ! I like both of those so much, especially the second one! I had a similar dress year ago and it flattered me even built the way I am-always got compliments on it. I’m saving that link just in case something comes up.
@doschicos Nordstroms (where i just ordered the first dress on list for D2’s wedding) has free shipping and returns. That helps.
Yes, if I were to wear the dress I recently bought from Sundance for D1’s wedding, it would help on the financial end and perhaps justify spending in the $400 range for the dress for D2’s wedding. There are still shoes to buy for these and hotels for me to book out of town for both weddings, plus paying for the weddings, which is all very challenging for me in the first place. I’m not opposed to wearing the Sundance dress I recently purchased for D1’s wedding, even though that was not my intent when I picked it out. It does fit the occasion. I may consider trying a couple others just to be sure, but some of you think the dress I already bought would work nicely and so that is helpful to know.
D2’s wedding is dressier and at night and more of an affair and more of a challenge likely for me to find. I do have plenty of time though. However, if I like any of the dresses I found online so far, I should likely order them before they sell out. Not sure what MOG will wear. She is thin. I have met her and she comes across as not that fashionable (plus no make up), but I saw her in casual circumstances. Lives in midwest.
