I’m a girl, although I’ve never been one of those chicks who comes to school in full eye makeup and my hair barrel curled all the time. I don’t wear heels on a regular basis, nor do I wear extensive jewelry and fussy blouses. Normally, I just wear skinny jeans, slip ons (not vans; more like toms)t-shirts, and a hoody under a cargo jacket. All of my stuff is form-fitting, but I can’t help but get the feeling that I’m being upstaged by these Vannessa Hudgen wannabes. lol.

Is there something I can do to feminize my style a bit more (nothing drastic)? And also, I have an afro so most suggestions about my hair are null and void lol.

I was just thinking a couple of bangles, and a little mascara…do you think this will be enough?

Sometimes I wear my hair in a giant poof that’s sort of afro-ish, I suppose. I think earrings feminize that sort of hairstyle.
Maybe drop the hoodies, wear more “stylish” jackets, vary your shoes a bit, perhaps including some cute ballet flats. A blouse every once in a while instead of a t-shirt might not hurt, or at least stick to nicer t-shirts (ie: few or none with smart-alecky sayings and wear interesting colors).

ashleybobashley: Your style sounds cute! Urban Outfitters and Free People seem like stores that could help you feminize your style a bit. (urbanoutfitters.com & freepeople.com) Throwing on a cargo jacket over a cute dress with ballet flats could be a really cool juxtaposition.

There’s a big difference between looking feminine and slutty… You don’t need to have your boobs exposed to look feminine nor do you need to wear a skirt that barely covers your ass. Wearing straight-leg or skinny jeans with a pretty blouse or a more boyish look with mascara and a tangle of necklaces can provide a feminine look. Honestly, nice skin, and some curves, you don’t need to dress up to look like a girl! Go to this girl’s blog for style inspiration: thekillingmoonconfused.blogspot.com… She’s a total tomboy, complete with messy hair and men’s oversized shirts.

Anyway, if that’s your style, embrace it! I personally love the “borrowed from the boys” look. Try a form-fitting blazer with skinny jeans and pumps. Take a look at street style blogs such as The Sartorialist and Jak & Jil for more inspiration.

By the way, I think that afros are awesome…

^I completely agree about free people and urban outfitters. Those
are my two favorite stores. You should also check out american apparel.
they have a huge variety - and i especially love their oversized t-shirts
and sweaters.
You can look laid back and comfortable, while also still being fashionable.
Skinny jeans, a loose shirt - t shirt or blouse - and a simple, long necklace with
flats is perfect for school. :)

Dresses FTW. When I started wearing dresses more regularly to school, I started to feel more feminine. One defining feature of being recognized as “womanly” is having an “hour-glass” figure. It doesn’t matter if you actually have it or not, but wearing things that define your waist (e.g. waist belts, high-waisted pants/shorts/skirts) should help.

I’m not big on accessories just because I’m not good at matching them up, but when I want to feel girlier, I wear headbands or big bows :P

To feminize your style, I would wear blouses, bright colored polo shirts, skirts with a floral pattern ( A&F), and cardigans. Also, wear ballet flats and accessories like headbands.

Just wear skirts/dresses from time to time, and maybe wear some subtle makeup, not too flashy. If you want to wear pants/shorts, try delicate, feminine tops with them [not necessarily floral, but a delicate cotton or silk or some subtle lace detail goes a long way. floral shorts are cool too]. Even gingham and seersucker are feminine done correctly. flats and sandals are a lot more school appropriate than heels anyway [i love my sperry’s too :)]

Indeed, nothing is as it seems nor is it otherwise. Perhaps you have construed my aforementioned inquiry, which was intended as a humble humor, too seriously.
