Think memorial day, outside ceremony, probably hot, thick waist, need sleeves, 50ish, style leans toward more fun side. . .

It’s difficult finding a fun dress that would suit hot weather that has sleeves. Some finds:
These with a cardigan:

Thank you for starting this thread. I woke up this morning wondering what I would buy for my son’s upcoming graduation.

Keep the ideas coming.

Why are dresses with sleeves so hard to find ? Even the dresses in winter months…Even a short sleeve or cap sleeve. My daughter graduates the first weekend of May in Boston . Looks like a cardigan once again

Those dresses could be worn with flats. You wouldn’t want to wear heels if the graduation is outdoor. You could add a short jacket or sweater with those dresses.

full sleeve, half sleeve, or just not sleeveless?

[Coldwater Creek](http://www.coldwatercreek.com/product-detail/63648/70469/dappled-faux-wrap-dress.aspx?refLink=misses-dresses.aspx)

You might also consider a hat for an outdoor ceremony. At DS’s graduation last year, many of us resorted to making a tent out of the program and putting it on our heads. Classy looking, good thing the graduates were facing the other way.

Sleeves are good. I still remember my sister’s outdoor graduation 25 years ago, and the woman in the loose fitting sleeveless dress with no bra. Maybe she just liked showing off what she had, but no one wants to have “that mom.”

I used a sleeveless dress with a very light and open weave summer sweater over it. Even though weather was hot, the open weave just kept the sun off and kept me cool. Think a sheer cover too. Then the options really open up.

Very good idea.

I think wrap dresses are flattering and can minimize a fuller waistline.

Congratulations on the graduation!

Capri’s and a nice top are standard wear for graduation for the mom’s here :D.

DS graduated at 10:30 AM, outside ceremony. It was a bit chilly as we were finding our chairs and the grads were processing. THEN, the sun came out with full force and we sat in the blazing sun for almost 3 hours! I was so glad to have dressed in layers! I wore separates–nice slacks, a cami and a linen jacket. Roommate’s mom wore a full-skirted sleeveless dress and a light-weight cardigan. We both commented that we needed our wraps, but were glad to be able to remove it as needed! A hat would have been nice as well.

Also, the moms (and grads) who chose to wear heels regretted that choice as the ground was soft (not muddy) from the previous day’s rain. I saw more than one get ‘stuck’ and one dear lady fell because her heels sank into the earth! --A word to the wise…

My own graduation was held in a stadium. Choose carefully when climbing bleachers may be on the agenda!

BTW, congrats on the graduation!

I wore a light brown scoop neck, a-line linen dress to an outdoor Florida graduation. There were no bleachers, wore wedge coral sandals and a coral and turquoise necklace. The sleeves were a little longer than cap but not tight fitted. Women were advised not to wear heels. You could go with a sleeveless cotton or linen dress with a crochet bolero or a lightweight cotton shawl.
Most women wore cotton sundresses or long cotton skirts with knit tops, some wore linen or polished cotton capris with cotton camis. There was a nice selection of dressy sandals and ballet flats. Those that wore any synthetic fiber dresses were drenched and uncomfortable. Husband wore khaki slacks, boat shoes and a Tommy Bahama tone on tone shirt.
Florida is casual and the weather, even early in the am was hot, sunny and humid.

If it’s outdoors – be careful in selecting your shoes. You really don’t want to be wearing heels if you’ll be walking on a lot of soft grass. And if it’s drizzly, sandals can be a problem, too.

The college I went to, and where my daughter graduated, has an outdoor Memorial Day weekend ceremony. Some people dress up. But there are plenty of people who dress very casually. Many wear shorts! I didn’t buy a special outfit for the event. But I did make sure that I was wearing something that would look good in photos, but not overwhelm the picture, since the graduate is the most important.

I remember my D’s HS graduation. It was in the middle of a heat wave and was about 100 degrees and very humid. The kids had to wear those synthetic graduation gowns that were like a sauna in the heat. I hope it won’t be like that for your graduation. If it’s going to be hot, I’d avoid synthetic fabrics. Cotton or linen might be a better choice.

Just remember that you will probably be sitting on folding chairs with a potential side view for all the world to see. Make sure the dress has enough length as to not slide up while seated.:p

D’s graduation was in early June. Had picked out a nice sleeveless dress with a short sweater. Boy, was that a bad choice. The weather was freezing that day and I couldn’t wait to get indoors …didn’t want to hang outside for pictures :(

Cute, long sleeves, drop waist, fun colors:

DD’s graduation was mid June in a part of the country noted for temperate temps year round. I chose a sleeveless dress and had a sweater just in case. Well…it was in the high 80’s and sunny and the graduation was on the soccer field.

I would suggest that the OP consider something with layers as weather is so unpredictable. If OP cant find a dress with sleeves, perhaps a dress with a very light weight jacket with short sleeves would work.

In any event…wear comfy shoes!

I am an apple body type with roundish upper arms, but i think that it looks better to go sleeveless than a short sleeve because those are always in the wrong place.
( although elbow lenght can look good)

Its worth finding a cute sweater or jacket, that is of a more structured material than a lightweight dress, keeping in mind that on the loose side is going to look better than stretched tight.

I was going to add onto the " dressing young" thread, but Ill keep this one going, because while I don’t have any graduations for a while, I do have some events that are dressier than my uniform of layered tees & slim jeans, but not dressy enough to get out my charity ball gowns.

I like this dress, but cant think of how to jazz it up a little, or if it needs it.

Good point about shoes. Graduations are early enough that the ground can still be saturated.

A pretty tunic with capri pants could be really cute.
Apples don’t have much of a waist, so you need to raise it, with a wrap or empire waist.
Pretty necklines raise the eye away from your tummy!
I like scoops or square necks, or even ballet.
