Once my mom leaves work in December, will I need to make changes to my FAFSA for the Fall 2015/Spring 2016 school year?

<p>FAFSA based on the previous year’s income. So aid for the 2015-2016 school year is based on 2014’s income. So, no. </p>
<p>I would recommend speaking to your school’s financial aid office about filing a special circumstances request. Your family can explain their situation and you will likely be required to do some paperwork to project what the 2015 year will look like. The school can guide you through this process based on their policy. </p>
<p>This is not a guarantee of additional aid, as the school had federal guidelines to follow. It might be difficult to get more aid, especially since your mom quit so late in the year. However, it won’t hurt to run the figures with your school to see if there is any aid adjustment. </p>

<p>What school is this and what is your dad’s income from TWO jobs? </p>
<p>When you file FAFSA in a year (2016), then if your mom has quit and works part-time, the family income may drop BUT it might not still be low enough for much/any grants. Full federal grants require income to be quite modest. </p>
<p>First, refer to it as your mother ‘resigning for health reasons’ when you request the special circumstances. You can file an appeal of the 2014-15 for next semester AFTER the event occurs. Your mother will have to file the appeal, showing when and why she left her job (letter from a doctor would help) and you have to send in your parents’ tax return (signed) used with the 2014/15 FAFSA.</p>
<p>I’m not sure you’ll get a lot more in financial aid, but may get extra work study or subsidized loans. Check on your school’s web page for FA for the appeals form and any required documentation.</p>

<p>If so, then your mom’s quitting now won’t help you since it sounds like you’ll be graduating by the time any future lower income changes your EFC. </p>
