Mom's cold feet: final application list for composition major

OK, I know I have been gone for a while, but with all these darn applications, essays, scores and recordings to kick out the door…Well here we are one week to deadline and DS has applied to many a school. I’m OK with his choices, it’s the back up I am still worrying about. I know Spirit Manager recommended we look at Univ. of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory. After considering back ups DS chose that one over possiblilities: U. of Colorado; U. of IL. In addition he has applied to IU, CIM, U. of Cinncinatti conserv, NEC, BOCO, Eastman, Manhattan and will complete NWU Bienen by Jan. 1st. Husband and I wanted him to apply to U. Of Michigan, but the essays were too overwhelming to him after doing the other applications, and I think he felt he had enough big schools on the list. He is spreading out the applications to many since he is not sure if he will be accepted anywhere. Or even asked to audition. Might be a mistake, but the real question remains, is there somewhere we missed for back up? Is UMKC a good music school, composition dept. ? Anyone else with information?

If your son wishes a true backup he might consider applying to a non-audition composition program.

As for UMKC - it has some very exciting composition professors, and interesting students - but know that it is a HUGE department, and quite international.

An earlier thread when i was asking this question in case you haven’t seen it: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/533216-conservatory-univ-missouri-kansas-city.html?highlight=UMKC+chen

Thanks, this is very helpful. I have passed on the information to my son and he is amazed by this site and the information shared. He thinks you all should be paid…

My son’s final list for Comp ended up as: Curtis, MSM, Boyer and Sarah Lawrence. He’s also applying to Drexel, Rutgers and Columbia. We’ll let the chips fall where they may.
