My wife and I are both students, one attending HACC and the other attending PSU. THe campuses are approximately 4 miles apart. We live about 60 miles from the campuses. We are looking to move to the city in which they are located. My summer semester is covered by FAFSA and some Sallie Mae. However, I applied for enough money from SM to pay rent for a few months until we can get jobs and get on our feet. The problem is, my school will not refund the amount of money required for us to move, even though SM approved the loan. The school is sending the rest of the money back to SM. How can I get a private loan (with deferred payment) in my own pocket and not handled directly by the school. This is a school expense as HACC does not have housing and PSU does not have any for married couples/pets. The gas and wear and tear on our car is really adding up and we need to get out of my parents basement. HELP!!!

Schools cannot certify loans that exceed the cost of attendance. Your summer COA is all that can be awarded in aid … so the COA - all aid, including federal loans = the amount of SM loan that can be certified by the school. SM can approve you for more, but the school has to certify the allowable amount. You will not be able to receive more than the school has determined you may receive.

Did you borrow the maximum COA amount for the past school year? If not, you may still be able to get that money, and though it will go through the school, it will be sent to you. If you both have borrowed up to COA for the past school year and the summer, then you are not entitled to any more through that venue. You can try to get a credit card that gives you a no interest period preferably, and pay when you get your fall funds or earn the money. But you cannot get more educational loans than what the official COAs are.
