Hi – we’re travelling this weekend for a large family event and are scheduled to stay with my brother and sister-in-law. Found out last night their daughter has been ill with mono for a MONTH and was just given the go-ahead to return to school. Anyone with mono experience who can tell me how concerned I should be about staying in their house for the weekend with my two daughters? Thanks.

Don’t be at all concerned. If she’s contagious, as long as no one is making out with her or passing a water bottle back and forth, you’ll be fine. Mono doesn’t spread very easily. A lot of seemingly healthy people can spread mono, as well.

My son’s girlfriend has had mono for two months. The doctor told us specifically that mono is NOT all that contagious, except by exchange of saliva, sharing straws, etc. She has gone to school, seen him, etc., and her doctors strictly advised against having her quarantined, because of the low risk of spreading it in normal daily contact.

You should be fine!

A co-workers daughter has had mono recently. After about a week, she was able to return to school for short periods each day (not because she was contagious but because a whole day was too tiring). I think you will be safe.

As others have said, as long as water bottles or the like aren’t shared, there should not be a problem. My ds was sick for a very long time the spring/summer before he began college (there were some complications.) His dr. just gave the same sort of precautions, adding stuff like don’t share a bowl of popcorn (my kids tend to lick the salt & butter off their fingers while eating it.) It’s possible that the month out of school was due to simply feeling drained and too tired to manage lugging books, changing classes, etc.

My d had it in 5th grade, no one else got it in the family. I got it in the fall, and no one else in the family got it. Don’t share any glasses or silverware, wash your hands often and don’t worry about it.

Thanks, all. We will go off with more peace of mind. Mother-in-law’s 80th birthday… and all 9 children and their offspring are flying in. Glad to be going into this celebratory weekend wihtout worry. Thanks, again.
