So…if my daughter has some monologue ideas and some names of plays and the playwright, do we have to purchase these plays to see the monologues and see if they will work or should she just literally go to the library and see what they have?. The monologue problem is driving me crazy
The library may work- depends on size of their play selection
You can try contacting the playwright, if possible, to see if they will send you or point you in the direction of a portion of the script (a sample script) for perusal. He/she likely has a website. Let him/her know why you’d like the sample. D did this a few times and received positive responses. In a couple cases, the playwright suggested a couple other plays he/she had, also, and once, one explained why the one D requested wouldn’t be a good choice, but maybe this other one would.
it is MOST beneficial and helpful to your daughter to read the plays to fully understand the character’s objectives/intentions when she will have to perform the monologue. You don’t necessarily have to purchase the plays, though. Try and go to your local bookstore and sit down for a good read, or even ask your library to see if they have the selections she wants. Best of luck to you and your daughter!!
