Just as important as it is choosing a song, same goes for monologues. I am not to familiar with non-overdone monologues. For my college auditions I was hoping if you all could recommend monologues that have given you or your children success in their audition. BACKGROUND: Male, 6"2, Black, 17 years old. Two contrasting would be great thanks!

Have you looked into August Wilson? I’m not sure you need to do a black character’s monologue btw, given all the trend towards color-blind casting. You certainly shouldn’t for your classical if you do one. But Wilson is a great great writer and he’s created a pretty broad range of black roles.
Where are good places to look for monologues I am also looking. I found one from You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, where he’s at lunch time, but that’s about it.
I suggest going to a library and flipping through the Humana Festival books. Great material in there. They also have ten minute plays that may have something suitable.
I was told that for contemporary monologues to pick something that was written in the last five years. Is that true/important to do?
There is a wonderful store in NYC a that also has a website that is very helpful. The store is called the Drama Bookshop and it has been around for many, many years. You can google them as I don’t think I’m allowed to put their website on CC. There is a small monologue section on their website that is broken down by gender, age, and comedic or dramatic. You may get some ideas there just to get you started.
One other piece of advice, When you have a list of monologues to consider, check the plays they come from out from your local library if possible. You really need to read the entire play of whatever monologue you choose so you understand the character and the context of the monologue in relation to the rest of the play. And make sure the character and the story are something you relate to and like. Remember you will be performing this piece for months and months. So it needs to be something you will enjoy spending a lot of time with.
