Monroe Community College, Rochester, Liberal Arts Health Related

What is this? I was not accepted into my desired course, but instead this? Is it worth doing? Has anyone else done it before? Is it just a waste of time?

Admission to the health majors (nursing, rad tech, dental hygiene, etc.) is very competitive at MCC. Most students interested in one of these programs are placed in the Liberal Arts- Health Related major. There are very few direct admits into any of these programs. As a LA-HR major, you will take a certain number of prerequisites (math, English, anatomy/physiology) that differ based on which health program you want. You essentially have to “prove” yourself by obtaining good grades in these prerequisites and then based on your grades, you will compete against other students to get into the major. During this time you will take other general education classes that will go toward your eventual health-related major or many other majors. Be aware that it can take two years to complete the prerequisites, then if you are admitted to the major, it is typically four semesters of clinical work. If you want to get into any of the health related programs, this is what you will have to do, so it is not a waste of time. If you go to the Advising office at MCC, they can go into more detail on this process. Also, MCC often hosts information sessions for the health majors where you can learn more about the process.
