Monroeville is about 15 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh. Pretty suburban. Not a place that would have much of a scene for young people (unlike Oakland, Shadyside, Bakery Square area with Google and East Liberty, Lawrenceville,etc.). Probably need a car although there should be bus service into downtown. Congratulations on the internship! I know PPG has offices in Monroeville (as well as Downtown) but not sure how many other companies have offices there .

You may get more response about Monroeville if you ask about Pittsburgh and internships in general. A thread about Monroeville may not bring many people to it. Good luck to your son with his internship!

OP: It’s been many years since I lived in Pittsburgh, so my information may be dated. That said, I remember Monroeville being a strip mall wasteland & not pedestrian-friendly (a car will be needed). It is a safe area for work, but as sevmom noted, not a particularly lively for a young adult after work or on weekends. You might find better housing suggestions on the forums for Pitt, Carnegie Mellon & Duquesne. Monroeville is a manageable 15-20 minute commute from the Pitt & CMU campuses, which would be a more desirable area for a young person to live.
