montreal

does everyone at the university of montreal use french as their first language?

It’s the language of instruction there. I’m sure you can find people who were born not speaking French, but it will probably be the lingua franca on campus.

I am not so sure it is the language of instruction, although I could be wrong. It is just that I know several people who studied there and none of them spoke French. I think students have the option taking the exams in French, but I am pretty confident that the language of instruction is English.

Université de Montréal is the biggest university in Québec, and, except for maybe a few small/obscure programs (I think there’s a trilingual MBA at the affiliated HEC), the language of instruction is French.

Oh yeah, I would never recommend anyone to go there. Especially people whose first language is not French.

Ooops, I thought we were talking about McGill. The University of Montreal’s main language of instruction is French. Sorry about that.

ah alright well then that’s going off my list because I only know french somewhat

McGill, however, does hold all classes in english, i hear. But the town is still mostly french speaking and many students, too.

McGill was established as an English institution and conducts all classes in English. The city has many more primary French speakers than primary English speakers, but most everyone is bilingual and it is not difficult to get around or anything if you are an English speaker.
