mood-elevating story

I saw something very sweet at work today and wanted to share it with those who might be as in need of an emotional lift as I was. I work at a senior center, and today we hosted our annual holiday party. Ours is neither a residence nor a daycare facility - it’s a drop-in center for independent seniors. About 90 seniors came for a holiday luncheon, followed by entertainment from the local high school’s show choir.

The kids were singing “Someone to Watch over Me” when I noticed one couple stand to leave the room. I thought at first that Judy was helping Don to the restroom because Don has Alzheimer’s - although previously he’d been able to manage the bathroom on his own. They went down a hallway where they couldn’t be seen from the main room. And they started dancing! Real boy-girl 1940s dancing, cheek-to-cheek, for the entire song. They didn’t see me, but I was so happy to have seen them. It gave me a glimpse into their long marriage, and made me glad for all the happiness they must have shared.

I was blubbering for the next 15 minutes!

sniffle How utterly BEAUTIFUL!!! And an especially touching story today, on my 21st wedding anniversary! Thanks for sharing this, frazzled! ~berurah

That is lovely. Yes, blubber time. Here’s another that might have the same effect. It’s especially relevant for the holidays on a website where parents agonize over small gains in SAT scores. And sometimes misunderstand each other on our posts about religious beliefs and traditions: A 23 year old Jewish believer in Santa. (He has fragile X syndrome and can’t read or tell time, but is delightful and deeply loved by his writer mom.)
