As part of the ongoing effort to balance the budget within a set number of years, more budget cuts were announced today.
The actual “what gets cut”, specifically, has to be determined by the affected units. Commonwealth Campuses will have the most cutting to do. There is also an ominous mention of eliminating “outdated” programs.
A sign of the times. Programs rise and fall in popularity/demand. Some programs are expensive to run. Unless you have a large student population completing those programs, then they become unsustainable. Schools typically look at student enrollment trends and marketplace indicators (e.g., job posting, industry growth) to determine what programs to put on “hiatus.” If the trend turns, they reintroduce them. You can’t be something to everyone. They need to offer and support the programs that are in demand (e.g., AI and CS growth in the last few years).
If you enroll in a school to complete a specific major (and you declare that major before it is removed),the school is under an obligation to help the student complete their program. Every school does this (sunsets programs) occasionally based on lack of demand. You are just hearing about this one now. Major programs like business, engineering, medicine, etc, aren’t going anywhere. It’s the small obscure ones that drain resources that could be better utilized elsewhere. But none the less, it is a valid issue to raise with an AO.
High time I guess. Look at the tuition inflation compared to other household goods. It ha# one of the highest tuitions for a state flagship. The inflation in college tuition has far outstripped that of others’ like health care and housing
I wouldn’t be based on the budget cuts. It is an incredibly management-heavy university, so student services are not likely to be noticeably impacted.
However, the plan to have the freshman class be 10,000 is a bit disturbing. It’s fine to trumpet fancy courses and big name research professors – but average student is unlikely to be lucky enough to get any of that. For the price (esp OOS) there are many many choices that make more sense.
