Not a celebrity, but a very important person.
Oh man, we lost Marianne Faithfull today. Such an angelic voice.
Ugh. So many icons of the Sixties are going. I hate it.
And sadly Dick Button died. Two time gold medal Olympic winner. Longtime figure skating commentator.
Already a sad day for figure skating to add Dick Button’s death to.
Oh nooo!
He was 95. For those of us who are older, he was synonymous with Olympic ice skating–first as a participant and later as a sportscaster.
He was an icon. It’s so interesting how the sport has evolved since his time - back when he was competing, his BIG jump was a double axel. Now Illa can land a quad axel, and you need a triple just to be competitive. And back when he was competing they still had to do figures - the thing the sport is literally named for, but which few people even bother learning now. Dick had certainly seen it all and was himself a legend.
Nobody has ever come close to Dick Button’s commentary. Here is one of my favorites: Button commentating on Rudy Galido’s long program at the 1996 US Championship.
ETA: I always watch all the way to the end–his sister, the kiss and cry, Dick Button’s comments.
I was going to reference this … H and I still talk about it! Dick Button taught us so much about skating.
Thanks for posting that. So fun to revisit.
I looked Rudy up to see what he’s doing now. He’s coaching, and one of his students is Kristi Yamaguchi’s daughter.
Yes! We used to see them all the time at competitions here in the Bay Area (my daughter used to compete against Kristi’s daughter ).
Donald Shoup, who has “a strong claim on being the scholar who will have had the greatest impact on your day-to-day life”… and my S’s favorite professor (and mentor)
Oh, that was charming. Well worth reading.

I was just about to post. RIP
