More celebrity RIPs

While all NHL goalies wore masks by the mid 1970’s, believe it or not, it wasn’t until 1979 that masks for goalies and helmets for all were mandated. And even then, returning players were grandfathered.

RIP Glenn

Who remembers the mask of the Boston Bruin Gerry Cheevers? He had a scar painted on his mask for every time he took a puck to the mask.

In New England sports history there is an iconic photo of Bobby Orr parallel to the ice just after scoring the winning goal vs the St Louis Blues to win the 1970 Stanley Cup. In the lower left, the Blues goalie is none other than the late Glenn Hall. In my humble opinion perhaps the greatest hockey photo ever taken.

Dilbert creator Scott Adams has died aged 68 following a battle with prostate cancer.

“It all collapsed quickly in 2023 when Adams, who was white, repeatedly referred to Black people as members of a “hate group” and said he would no longer “help Black Americans.” He later said he was being hyperbolic, yet continued to defend his stance.”

These last two deaths were way too close for comfort.

I saw Bob Weir live in concert twice. The first time he was with the Grateful Dead when I was 17 years old in my first month or two at university. The other time was way more recently. He was with Furthur and I was with a daughter, back when she was still considering making a living in music. She was starting to think that a musician might get tired of playing the same songs over and over again, so I did not mention that I had heard them playing “Uncle John’s Band” twice something like 40 years apart (it was a great song both times, and was very new the first time). Both concerts were really good.

And Scott Adam’s death at 68 from prostate cancer makes me think of one thing that I was doing when I was 68 (it had something to do with cancer). I do not know if I was lucky, or if I should thank my oncologist and my radiation oncologist, or both.

Perhaps this entire thread should remind all of us to appreciate every day that we have in this world.

If she weren’t an unwed and pregnant teen, she’d likely have been the face of the movement.

Does it freak anyone else out that she was only 86 (I mean in terms of how recent the civil rights movement and all it fought against is). I mean it shouldn’t surprise me given recent events but I still feel like it should be ancient history and a major figure who’s younger than my (still living) mom makes it seem so recent.

Well, she was 15 at the time.

But it was strange because I was just discussing her with a friend a couple of days ago, and I looked up to see if she was still alive.

Jim McBride, whose ability to write catchy country songs inflected with honky-tonk flair resulted in a long string of hits for artists like Alan Jackson, Waylon Jennings and Conway Twitty, died on Jan. 7 in Huntsville, Ala. He was 78.

If you’re a fan of country music you’d probably recognize some of the songs he wrote including “Chattahoochee” and “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow”.

What a talent. I love his kind of writing.

Leonard D. Jacoby, who as one-half of the law firm Jacoby & Meyers revolutionized the legal world in the 1970s by bringing low-cost services to everyday Americans — and by winning the right to advertise those services on billboards and television — died on Monday in Manhattan. He was 83. In 1977, the California Supreme Court — and, in a separate case, the U.S. Supreme Court — ruled that banning legal advertising was unconstitutional. Within a few weeks, the firm was running ads on television. In Southern California in the late 1970s, the ads were inescapable — the firm was running up to 100 a week, each ending with the slogan “Jacoby & Meyers: It’s about time.”

He wasn’t a celebrity singer or actor but perhaps as well known. If you were in the SoCal area at the time the ads were everywhere!

I saw Jackson Browne in concert just days before his son passed. He was in such a good mood, his voice sounded awesome, and his band was incredible. Sad that this happy time probably ended, if not forever, for the foreseeable future.
