That’s a very impressive tribute wall!
I met both Arlo Guthrie and Harry Chaplin. Both were the nicest guys in person. ![]()

Dr. Joseph F. Fraumeni Jr., who helped discover one of the first examples of a cancer linked to a human gene, paving the way for a field that has so far seen the discovery of more than 120 genes that predispose people to cancer, died on June 22 in McLean, Va. He was 93.
Besides his pioneering research on hereditary links to cancer, Dr. Fraumeni did groundbreaking work in identifying environmental and lifestyle risks for cancer. For decades, he led the world’s top cancer epidemiology program, at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md.
“He belongs on the Mount Rushmore of epidemiology,” Dr. Norman E. Sharpless, a past director of the institute, told The Cancer Letter, a news site, after Dr. Fraumeni’s death.
I learned about Li and Fraumeni’s research last fall when I read A Fatal Inheritance, which is about the families with multiple generations of hereditary cancers who were the subjects of the scientists’ research.
Fascinating read about a dedicated scientist who persisted for years in the face of derision from his peers who were sure that all cancers were caused by viruses.
Wally Funk, who was one the Mercury 13, died today.
The Mercury 13 were 13 women who were tested for the US astronaut corps in the 1960s, but sexism prevented them from being considered for astronaut training. The women passed all the same physical and psychological tests the men did and many of the women had far more hours of piloting experience than did the men.
Wally Funk was the only woman of the Mercury 13 to make it into space. She flew aboard the Blue Origin New Shepherd 4 flight 16 at the age of 84. She is the oldest person to have flown into space.
I loved that show as a kid, and he was my favorite ![]()
I had such a crush on him!
I also had a crush on him!
Me too!
Same!
80? How did people get so old so suddenly? ![]()
And he’s beyond the ‘11 and a half’ rule for me (my mother was 23 years older than me, so anyone more than 11.5 years older than me is closer to her age than mine - but this rule didn’t apply to Paul McCartney as I would have married him even though he’s way closer to my mother’s age).
My mother was only 15 when she had me. When an older guy (I worked with) was hassling me to go out with him, I eventually told him “I don’t go out with guys older than my mother” - it worked ![]()
Last survivor of polio using an iron lung has died.
This was shocking. There is so much speculation on Mitch McConnell so I wasn’t expecting this.
Life is unpredictable
This was a surprise.
Hit my husband hard - “He was younger than me??” Ugh.
Cardiac arrest.
My husband saw this as breaking news on some English language Ukrainian news site he was looking at last night just before we went to bed. He thought that they must’ve confused LG with Mitch!!! He checked CNN, BBC - nothing was up yet. Finally,
WaPo reported it. Well, the Ukrainians must have been informed quickly because he just returned from his visit to their country. My husband was shocked.
