Quincy Jones had quite a few local ties. Our paper published a couple of good tributes to him.
Quincy Jones produced and conducted We Are The World, probably the greatest-ever confluence of pop-music talent. that was just the tip of his enormous musical iceberg – the man was one of the most influential writers and producers in the industry.
(Probably preaching to the choir, but just in case anyone didn’t know…)
Quincy Jones was a master at many things. A real loss for the music world. My husband had a meeting with him many years ago, said he was a good guy.
And the Sanford and Son song amongst many others.
Since this isn’t the politics thread I’ll leave this here without comment:
He did fund the Stroke and Neuroscience center at Grady hospital, and the aquarium in Atlanta. And he owns (owned?) the Atlanta Falcons. I’ll also leave it at that.
I think it is actually the other co-founder of Home Depot, Arthur Blank, who is the owner of the Atlanta Falcons.
No further comments.
Oops of course. Cognition is off kilter today…
But he did fund the Marcus Autism Center. Need to credit that one.
I can disagree with Bernie Marcus’s politics while also acknowledging his family’s many philanthropic contributions. He was extremely generous in multiple areas, especially after his retirement. From healthcare to children and community to Jewish causes…I’m sure there are more I’m not aware of… he gave so much to the people of Georgia. Our family particularly enjoyed the Georgia Aquarium, which would not exist without Bernie Marcus.
Those are the memories I will concentrate on. RIP.
Exactly my point.
Wrong thread?
Kirk Herbstreit’s dog , Ben, passed away today. His cancer had spread toomuch and the family let him go.
If you do not follow college football — Herbstreit has brought his golden retriever withhim throughout the season these past 2 years, as he covers the sport. The dog is immensely popular and gets his own press credentials (at Penn State, for example, Ben was “treat analyst”)
Even the yelling on twitter stopped today long enough for a good and loyal doggo to trend.
Not a NASCAR guy but I know the name is well known
This one makes me really sad, she was such a wonderful person:
Awww, when I was first starting out in the early childhood field nary a preschool classroom that wouldn’t have her tunes on cassette players.
Bela Karolyi, the controversial US gymnastics coach, has died. He was 82.
Even though he became controversial, I got to meet him and get a picture the night we won gold at the '96 Olympics in Atlanta and was thrilled.
I was staying down the street from the team on the Emory campus and waited outside their place with a friend. Not many people knew they were there. We timed it perfectly … his and Marta’s car drove up and we jumped and squealed and they were still high from it all and were so kind to snap pics with us. Of course, that was when you had film developed and hoped you got something. It was dark so our pics were fuzzy, partly because we were buzzing with excitement.
