More Confirm vs. Chance Me (UCD, UCB, UCSC, SJSU, SFSU)

I’d like to see how realistic my expectations are based on my profile please.

37 yrs old

3.75 GPA

11 W’s - Sounds terrible but six were retaken with A’s, one retaken with a B, three were an attempt at Clinical Assisting (not for me) and the last was an unnecessary prereq Math class based on incorrect counseling advice. Is this something I can explain in the additional comments section?

Berkeley City College Transfer - AAs in Psychology and Political Science

Intended Major - International Relations or Global Studies

Female, URM African American (prefer not to identify), First Generation, Low Income

ECs - International Rescue Committee and SPCA volunteer

Job - Accounting Clerk, 45 hours a week

Goal - Manager/Director of a nonprofit or similar

Brief History - Teenage mother, worked full time right out of high school. Home life was toxic so moved out at 18. Son is on the spectrum. Was focused on making sure he would be ok and could provide for himself. Been a long road but he’s now doing very well at 21 so I’m comfortable going back to school full time. Started CC in 2015.

Safeties - SFSU, SJSU
Match - UCD, UCSC
Reach - UCB
Miracle Level Reach - Stanford

Thanks in advance for your help, any assistance is appreciated.

Apologies, forgot something. For UCSC the major would be Community Studies.

This will help for the UC’s: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major

Are you TAGing to either UCD or UCSC?

Best of luck and consider TAG if applicable.

@Gumbymom thank you! Very helpful. hmm…looks like I’m in range for UCB but toward the bottom. If I’m reading this right the middle range starts at 3.72. Above range for UCD, I plan on using TAG with UCD.

Wow I hope you get into some great schools. You worked 45 hours per week, with a child and went to school? I do think you can put all your additional information in the comments section.

@TheFrenchChef thank you for the kind words. I was fortunate enough to be able to take majority of the courses either online or in the evening. My last semester (4.0, yay for upward trend) included two POSCI, ECON and second semester SPAN all online.

Well as a mom of three who went back to school - taking online and in the evenings I think may even be harder! good for you, I hope you keep us all posted. What is it you hope to do? I took one class at Berkeley City College years ago, I think it was a human development class.

@TheFrenchChef that is an amazing accomplishment! What are your future plans?

I would love to manage an organization like the one I volunteer with, IRC. Places that help with humanitarian crisis issues, immigration, domestic violence, underrepresented groups of society etc., I’m open to doing different things (college counselor would be nice too) but thats my main focus. Cliche as this sounds I really just want to help people. I’m excited every day I volunteer, with my job not so much.

@Gumbymom already posted the UC transfers by major link above.

SJSU’s GPA thresholds for transfer students applying for fall 2019 entry. They may change this coming application season.

SFSU is not an impacted campus, and only some majors are impacted. The non-impacted majors at SFSU should admit California resident transfer applicants who fulfill the usual requirements with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
