More evidence that Nutella is addictive

acollegestudent–the reason I asked about the comparison to frosting is because apparently people use it as a meal itself, on sandwiches, rather than as a dessert like you do ( few people would eat frosting on a sandwich, I imagine.)

Garland, I see your point, but I feel like there are a lot of sweet meals - jam spread on toast/bagel, pancakes with syrup, danishes - I think it’s kind of the same thing.

Tropical habitat destruction and the extinction of wild orangutans is a direct result of our hunger for palm kernel oil.

We took the kids to Glacier NP to see the glaciers 2 years ago. By 2020 there will be no more glaciers there. Wild orangutans are predicted to be gone by 2023 - it’s time to visit Borneo before it becomes another Easter Island.

I like chocolate. I like nuts. But I don’t care for Nutella - it’s mostly sugar to me. I bought 2 giant jars of Nutella from Costco (they are packaged in pair) for my exchange student. He has left and there is still an unopened jar. Should have thrown it in his suitcase while he was not looking! It’s going to a food pantry.

“This is a self help group and we don’t need self righteous folks admonishing us!”

LOL!!! Indeed!

Magnetron, thanks for explaining - I am a big animal lover, so I will definitely look more into it.

Seems like the students at ColuMbia are big Nutella fans.

Magnetron, if you are trying to “enlighten” people to your way of thinking you’d probably do better with a less scolding approach. I’m sure we could do an audit of how you live your life and find things that aren’t perfect either. Geez.

I’m not knowledgable about this issue, but it does look like Ferraro, the company that makes Nutella, is aware of the concerns:

Perhaps everyone with unwanted jars of Nutella can donate them to Columbia!

By the way, people concerned about the ethics of palm oil ought to lay off the Starbucks until 2015. That’s when the company will start sourcing it from sustainable producers.

Anyone who thinks they aren’t consuming palm oil is probably mistaken:

Thanks to my European family, I was the most popular kid at the k8 lunch time. My friends loved to spend the night because breakfast would be crepes or waffles with nutella. Or some French baguettes. Looking at the negative stories, we must have contributed to the alarming obesity of dozens of families in our neighborhood!

On a serious note, Nutella is obviously not the healthiest product, but when eaten in moderation, it is not worse than other delicacies. The issue is that people should not eat by the spoonful. Europeans eat the stuff on bread or in desserts, but they do not snack on it all day.

And, fwiw, do we really think that PB or that Lotus Speculoos concoction is much healthier? Or three eggs with a greasy slab of bacon? Or a stack of IHOP crap loaded with syrup?

PS Note that your favorite Nutella spread will soon come from Mexico.

Palm oil is the lube that keeps Washington DC operating.

As with all foods, it’s all about moderation. The first time I went to our office in Amsterdam, I was shocked to see boxes of chocolate sprinkles on the breakfast buffet. You just sprinkle them on toast and smooth it on after it melts. I generally threw a few in my pocket for an afternoon sugar jolt.

Actually, natural peanut butter, such as Teddie–my favorite brand-- IS healthy. A couple of eggs and a strip of bacon is also “healthier”: no carbs, and eggs are a great food. The IHOP crap is probably worse than the Nutella, I agree.

In theory PB, eggs, and a slice of bacon are reasonable food. In reality, they are probably just as unhealthy in a non-moderated consumption. Are the peanuts that have become the standard gourmet meal on the plane really healthy? A small bag will not kill you, but waht if you ate 5 or 6 of them? What about eating 3 eggs and bacon for every breakfast during a trip? Is the bacon cooked in the microwave or sauteed in a good dose of oil or butter? Visions of Guy Fieri’s Triple D come to mind!

Again, eating 8 oz of Nutella on a 3 foot baguette is probably what not the doctor recommends, but a occasional “treat” will not kill any healthy person or child. The basic problem is mostly one of over-consumption and snacking outside the main meals.

Oh well, time for a Starbucks Caramel Macchiato. I’ll order it with skim milk and sugarfree vanilla. :)

PS Regarding the chocolate sprinkles, I forgot that Hagelslag was indeed the second choice. That or a couple of speculoos on a buttered sandwich (which is the origin of that speculoos spread, by the way) I have both in my pantry!

Those of you with unopened jars of Nutella you don’t want, please PM me for my address. :-D

On Holland America cruise ships, they stock the little boxes of sprinkles in the Lido buffet, both milk and dark chocolate. They pack easily and go great on homemade waffles!
