More Practice = Lower Score

I’ve exhausted all College Board materials so I’ve decided to do PR’s 11 tests. I’ve done research on this website and have found that PR’s 11 tests are the best 3rd-party resource when it comes to resembling the SAT accurately.

I’m mainly concerned with passage based reading on Critical Reading, and my scores keep getting worse as I practice. I went from -6 to -9 then -12 and -13 on critical reading sections. I review what I get wrong and it’s not like I’ve burned out from a lot of practicing. I only do 2-3 sections a day and it’s ONLY critical reading, no math or writing.

Can anyone explain this? Should I stop using PR? Is it harder than the SAT for reading especially? Kinda makes me not wanna practice anymore knowing it’s gonna get worse every time…

Maybe you’re just getting so used to doing SAT every day, you’re starting to not use hte same level of focus or intensity as you once did. SAT prep may have become more of a routine rather than a simulation test; focus is crucial for SAT. I realized this when I prepped for SAT/ACT. I just took a break for a couple days and just prepped ever 2 or 3 days.

Of course, this is just one possibility…

I guess that’s a possibility. Idk though cause I always do my passages untimed so my level of focus is uninterrupted. I’ll take a break though =P Thanks for helping.

Recommendation: do not practice untimed.

Try to go running or walking before you practice, get some oxygen to your cells. Never practice when tired. You can drink coffee before, but only half a cup for a quick pick-me-up (definitely not rec’d on test day, unpredictable crash). Also, be sure you have a suitable testing area. No couches or beds.

Also, take a subject you’re interested in and read articles about it. I found myself interested in astronomy, and a few wikipedia journeys can really help your speed and comprehension over the course of a couple months. Same w/ magazines, etc.

Or it could just be your luck…
I know I took around 50 practice tests on writing and I would sometimes randomly get 8 wrong when I usually only get 3~5 wrong.

Just keep doing more and find out if it was just luck… This shouldn’t discourage you to practice less.

I agree with seokkyu, it might just be that section. Or the difficulty level might be different for the PR tests compared to the CB materials. Either way, I think you should keep practicing.
