There are obviously some extremely big fish to fry, but I feel truly bad for the many families now thrown into turmoil by this.

What is a “nonimmigrant student”?

I have an absolutely outstanding student who is supposed to be starting an internship at Harvard Med School, picking up J-1 at the border in June. Got offered the best placements in North America and took this one. Asked me beforehand if Trump’s hostility to Harvard would be a problem. At that point, the admin had already frozen some DEI related grants. I said you’re not on a research grant, and it’s not DEI, and the government gets 5x more out of you in services than they pay you, so it is hard to imagine that those training positions would not be protected. That was back at the start of February, when I was still thinking that I could comprehend the administration. Wondering what the world will look like after 4 years.

Those who are here on study visas versus those who are on an immigration track (green card).

Is it a technical term?

This letter states as facts things for which there is no evidence. Very strange.

An F visa is a ‘non-immigrant’ visa designed for students (these aren’t designed to lead to citizenship/permanent residency.) These visas allow for the temporary presence of non-citizens in the US when they are enrolled full time as a student in college undergrad/grad programs.

J visas are ‘non-immigrant’ visas that are used for exchange or work study programs.

Please give an example.

Interesting. On page 1, the document refers to F- or J- nonimmigrant students. But on page 2 they simply refer to “nonimmigrant students” which is a vague term when not used with the specific visa specification.

International students are typically full pay, so this hits Harvard in their wallet.

Despite the direction that “aliens on F- or J- nonimmigrant status must transfer to another university to maintain their nonimmigrant status”, the timing of this notification makes it very difficult at a minimum - if not impossible - for these students to actually receive acceptance at another university.

Documents within 72 hours???

“. . . Root out the evils of . . .”

There is something about this document which strikes me as very amateurish. But what do I know? I wonder who wrote it.

Paragraph 2 on page 1.

Not at Harvard. They provide need-based aid to internationals.

They do. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t a substantial number of full pay international students. Harvard doesn’t publish these stats though, so we don’t know how much financial impact this will have.
