Morocco: Tips and Suggestions. Have you been there?

Love to hear any tips and suggestions if you’ve visited Morocco. Thanks!

When my husband traveled along the coast of Spain with our daughter in the summer of 2014, I arranged for them to take a ferry to Morocco. It was pretty expensive. The second they got off the ferry, they were MOBBED with people trying to “help” them - “You need our protection!” It was very scary, and they turned around immediately to get on the next ferry back to Spain! They have no desire to ever go back there. :frowning:

I was in Morocco for a couple of weeks, a number of years ago so I’m sure it has changed considerably. I found Fez to be the most interesting city so I would definitely go there. After many years, I can still remember the sounds and smells. Marrakech is also interesting. You can skip Casablanca. It is just a large city that isn’t particularly interesting.

D1 lived in Fez for several months. She says it was a great place to visit but she was more than ready to leave. She liked the food and the markets. The problem of being mobbed by “helpers” was no big deal to her. She just kept telling them no.

@MaineLonghorn - I’ve read that about the “helpers” which is driven by a combo of higher unemployment and a tourism based economy. I guess the options are to ignore them, repeatedly say no, or just hire one. Probably, in the case of your family, they should have just hired someone. Given the low labor cost, it is cheap, they’d have a tour guide, and others would have left them alone.

@DocT Yes, I’ve heard that Casablanca is worth skipping. Due to flights, we’ll fly in and out of there but there are other places I’d rather see.

Sorry, Please no flaming but I recommend visiting other places based on experience. Tetuan is a breeding ground for terrorism and the borders of Ceuta and Melilla at times offer uncontrolled passage into Europe. Especially now, please consider not visiting there. We have so many alerts right now to European countries; some are now off limits if you hold certain jobs. One who lives here, especially American or French, would not visit there at this time in light of the current conditions.

@MaineLonghorn is not exaggerating. You will feel very unsafe at times, especially when you are in the Kasbah and are being followed by a group of people. Taxi cab drivers will fight over you and the ports are worse.
