Morocco?

Has anyone traveled in Morocco? We were thinking about taking a holiday-time trip there with our teenage children. Our travel agent recommended “Globus” which apparently is a company that offers tours through numerous cities. The travel is by coach bus (which does not sound appealing - but I don’t know if there is any other way?) Any advice would be appreciated!

My son studied in Rabat last year and we visited him in December. He loved the country (most things about it anyway) and so did we. Were there for a week and would have liked to have more time. Because we wanted to spend some time in Rabat so we chose just one other place to visit, Chefchauoen (I think I spelled it right) in the Rif Mountains. We really enjoyed our time there. We actually rented a car and drove there. My son said his program’s field trips were mostly done with a chartered bus but I believe he travelled by train a bit too.

We travel internationally a lot. I use tripadvisor dot com to plan all our trips especially the forums. On the website you will see the forum link on the right - then select Africa and then Morocco. Morocco appears to be a pretty active forum. The people on tripadvisor are very helpful.

Globus is a big, well-known travel company. We have never done the bus trip thing. There are pros and cons to it. The pros are you don’t have to do any of the planning yourself, they move your luggage for you and get you from point A to point B. The cons are the trips tend to be pretty hectic and you generally don’t get to stay at any one tourist site for long. I like to pick our hotels and what sights we visit, so I prefer to do it on our own if possible.

I would do a tour group if it’s a place that is difficult to maneuver on your own (I don’t know if Morocco falls into this category or not). So far we haven’t run up against this (except for Russia. We just got back from Japan - did it entirely on our own) but Africa is a different story. We are considering going to Kenya next summer and I’m not comfortable doing that entirely on our own.

If you don’t want to do a full tour group - you can often pick up day tours once you get there - which gives you more flexibility. We do this a lot. We usually mix it up - some day tours and some on our own. Good luck - would love to visit Morocco.

We actually found it easier to get around Morocco on our own than Tuscany where we went next. I was very surprised by this. I was expecting Morocco to be overwhelming and bewildering. I think it can be (our travel agent described Tangiers, I think, as a “hellhole”). But Rabat and Chauoen were wonderful and I would have liked to see Fez, Meknes and other places. We just don’t like to pack too many destinations into a trip.

Incredible country. Marrakech alone deserves a week minimum. I resist bus tours period, but if you’re OK with them, Globus is reputable. I second Tripadvisor as a great place to choose hotels, get thoughts on where to go and how to get there. Fodor’s travel board too.
