According to Fiske’s guide, Amherst is supposed to be the MOST elitist of all the LACs in the nation. Well is that true? Which other LACs are also known for the elitist culture? and what are the advantages/disadvantages of an elitist environment?

Oh, please! With over 50% of the students getting FA, how can it be that elitist? D is diversity student, poor, and she loves it! Doesn’t feel out of place at all! She has friends who are also on FA, as well as friends that aren’t, and can pay full freight. It doesn’t matter. They are still friends. Plus the school, along with other schools, has joined in an effort to recruit achieving CC students.

Most people at Amherst are pretty down to earth. There are some elitist people, but it’s not that hard to avoid them.

I’m an elitist *******, and so is everyone in town! Settle down, mortal fools, and bask in my divine radiance!

But seriously, I think all the top schools are pretty elitist to some degree.

However, considering how Amherst makes such an active attempt to reach out to low income/low opportunity students, the elitist character of the school is less than it could be. There are definitely people that fit into both super-down-to-earth and super-elitist categories.

Like others have said, it’s not too hard to avoid the ‘elitists’ if you want. There are plenty of othher people on campus. No worries.

By elitist are you assuming that refers to economic elitist or intellectual elitist? I would have to believe that all top lacs and top universities have intellectual and economic elitists. Either way I hope their numbers are minimal as Amherst is number one on my application list. The only thing about Amherst as seen thru the postings on CC is that the Amherst students on here don’t rave about how much fun their school is as compared to their peer schools. The top 10 lacs will provide me the same education but to me the key to a school is the fun factor. I’m going to college to bust my a-- and get a great education but have a great time during my down time. I am looking forward to my overnight visit to get a feel for Amherst as a place that kids really love being a part of and miss when they aren’t there.

by ‘elitism’ it can be referring to the economic, the cultural, and the intellectual climate. it’s a general feel you get.

i wonder how all of you get the idea that elitism is a bad thing, haha. elitism just means unintended exclusiveness and inaccessability. belonging to an elite school can either mean rock-fun, or super-boring. anyone from amherst care to comment on the elitism in amherst and in other LACs?
