most popular majors at berkeley?

what are the most popular (or hardest to transfer into if you decide to change majors once you enroll) majors at berkeley? how hard is it to change majors?

i dont know about most popular, but it’s the easiest to just get into L&S undeclared, then pick a track. the hardest is the college of engineering; EECS, bioengineering, and undeclared engineering are the most competitive.

And the other colleges (CoC, CNR…) probably rank somewhere in between.

any major i would want would be in l&s, so you suggest applying undeclared, then (even if i did have a preference for one major)?

p.s. is your username referring to gilmore girls or something else?

For L&S, it doesn’t really matter what major you list, you are accepted as undeclared anyway. List what you’re interested in or list undeclared. It’s up to you and it makes VERY little difference.

Half the student body is pre-med.

^Not true, it is a large chunk, but not a majority

The five largest majors in L&S based off of the 2008 Career Center data are;

 1. MCB
 2. Political Science
 3. Economics
 4. Psychology
 5. English

the only non-L&S major of comparable size to those five majors is Haas - Business Administration, which is as large as Psychology and English

so then if i want to be an english major, it’s better to apply undeclared since that’s one of the most popular majors, i’m guessing?

Nope, L&S admits EVERYONE undeclared regardless what they put. When you apply for L&S your intended major you list is primarily for statistical reasons. Applying with English as your intended major will not put you at any disadvantage.

The only time I could envision an intended major listing hurting an L&S applicant is if the major they put is highly inconsistent with their essays.

ok and you’re 100% sure right? just want to make absolutely sure cuz i have heard on this forum some people saying to apply undeclared, but if you’re sure, i’ll apply as with my major…

but since it doesn’t hurt to apply undeclared (right?), maybe i just should to be safe. :-/
