What are the most unique extra curricular activities that you have heard that people apply with?

I’ve heard:
- Sailing a ship for 300 hours
- Researching family tree back to the 1700s
- Writing a weekly comic strip for a website
- Writing a science fiction novel
- Being part of the Emergency Medical Team at a hospital
- “Clam farting” (Lol, ignore this if you don’t get the reference)

NaNoWriMo (national novel writing month)
raising $5,000 by selling cupcakes

I actually think I may participate in NaNoWriMo. Even start a club at school about it. It seems really fun.

Luging. Got the applicant into Stanford.

[YouTube - amazing unicycle tricks](<a href=“amazing unicycle tricks - YouTube”>amazing unicycle tricks - YouTube)

I’ve actually seen several people on this site say they’ve done nanowrimo. There’s also a napowrimo (poetry) for anyone who’s interested!

These are all activities done by various people in my school:

EMT member

Internship in a radiology clinic

Lead singer/actor (very unusual for an Asian)

Breakdancer (me
hopefully this is unique)

Varsity hockey captain (again, very unusual for an Asian dude)

@JustSmile: What do you mean “got him in to Stanford?” Was he underqualified in other aspects of his application or something?

I think JustSmile means that luging added uniqueness to his application and he was accepted to Stanford, not that he wasn’t underqualified.

lol not sure how much luging he’ll be doing in stanford weather.

Off season training for Lugers is a lot of strength training and swimming. Their upper body strength is unbelievable. They also train in wind tunnels with wind up to 90mph keeping them stationary.

It wasn’t that he was under-qualified, it was that he was just like every other applicant --with a good GPA, good standardized test scores, everything you’d expect in an average Stanford applicant–but the fact that he was extremely dedicated to luging was what made him stand out.

Besides, how many people do you know who luge?

Clam farting by far.

tap dancing!

lol, I don’t know if it is that unique but my daughter is very good at it! Been tapping for 14 years now.

Unique clubs. I’ve heard of one girl being the leader of Tea Club. Or clubs that have in goofy/intellectual speakers.

In terms of how many people do it? Governor of a JSA region. Hard to do and there’s only a few of you.

@porkandsand; I don’t really consider those kinds of clubs extracurriculars though…

I know an Indian guy who’s a DJ. He has a big enough family network that he makes big money doing weddings and parties for them. He buys all his own equipment and has his own website.

I know another guy who’s a band promoter, and because we live in-between two very large cities, he’s able to book a lot of big metal, DnB, Dubstep and other-type bands for local concerts and stuff.

Both of them are pretty cool. They seem pretty passionate about what they do.

I’ve been breeding guppies and I hope to eventually sell them to Local Pet Stores and AquaBid.com to earn a little extra cash, but lately I’ve been bogged down with getting the water quality and feeding right. :|

well my ec was pretty impressive and different, I basically met the first family and volunteered for a whole day with Obama and Michelle and the children. I got tons of pictures and put one of them on my Commonapp supplement. So this was very different… probably why i got into soo many good schools with a low SAT score

Mohamed, if you don’t mind me asking, where are you going? I don’t really consider a one-time thing an EC, but that’s really cool!

Mohamed that is absolutely incredible, though I’d have to agree with toystoryfan since it was only one-time. Would you mind sharing how you were able to get such an amazing opportunity?
