<p>While I registered in the CSS Profile, I was asked for my mother status, as married, remarried, widowed, etc. My parents are divorced, my mom is my legal guardian and has not remarried LEGALLY. However, she had a son (my step-brother, who is 6) with her boyfriend and we have been living together since then. The four of us are a household, but my dad (who lives abroad) contributes monthly for MY expenses as stated in the divorce arrangement. Then, what I am supposed to choose? Has she just “divorced” or has she “remarried”?</p>
<p>I would guess “divorced”…unless in your state a marriage is recognized by common law after less than 6 years.</p>

<p>Yeah, you’d pretty much have to list her as divorced, unless as Thumper says, there is common law marriage in your state for people living together that long. </p>
<p>If you’re in one of the following states, do a little research about what exactly would qualify as a common law marriage – it will vary some from state to state:
Alabama
Colorado
Iowa
Kansas
Montana
Oklahoma (possibly only if created before 11/1/98. Oklahoma’s laws and court decisions may be in conflict about whether common law marriages formed in that state after 11/1/98 will be recognized.)
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Texas
Utah
Washington, D.C.</p>
