I just noticed a neighbor with a second home has cameras on their house, which is fine, but I am wondering, how far away do they see and how high is the spread? I am thinking of privacy and wondering what they may or may not see
They saw you.
Paint a bloody eyeball on a wall or fence facing them.
I’ve told guys working at our home that if they can see the camera, the camera can see them and there may be some cameras they haven’t noticed. That put a stop to guys relieving themselves on our shrubs instead of using the Porta-potty.
When the trees are bare in winter, I could see across the street if I chose to orient a pan/tilt/zoom camera that way. The lots across the street have never been developed, and I prefer for our front cameras to focus on our own property. There are enough evergreens on both our property and our neighbors’ that I couldn’t see them clearly even if I wanted to try.
Google satellite and whatever satellite service our property tax office uses cause me greater concern than any neighbors’ cameras. Both have amazingly clear images.
We have several cameras on our house but they’re not motion detection activated. They record constantly, and the ones pointed down the driveway, for instance, can see approximately 120 feet. We don’t have any that would be pointed at neighbour’s homes in the way you’re concerned about.
What did you do ?
Creeps me out…unless something happens and then it would be nice to have a pic of the bad guy. The states around us don’t have laws protecting you from being recorded when you’re in plain view anyway. It if sees inside your windows, that may be another matter. So check your area’s regulations.
And maybe get to know those neighbors and talk to them about the range and other details.
My neighbor’s motion lights go on when I’m walking the dog on the sidewalk, maybe 20-25 feet.
Now, on another note, I’d love to have a drone with a camera and fly it around the neighborhood, see what the neighbors are up to or just people watch. Lol, I wouldn’t. But I’d be pretty concerned if someone flew one in our yard or our part of the street.
I neighbor had a car break-in, (well not really a break-in - he left his computer in an unlocked car,) any how he was disappointed that we didn’t have a camera on his car! I once did a project in a condo complex where someone had a video camera facing out her window and they asked me to put a fence up so she’d no longer have a view of all the neighbors. That was a pretty funny one. I’m not a big fan of video surveillance, but unless your town has rules about them sticking to the property there may not be much you can do about it. Check your municipal code.
Anyone remember the movie…Ten
We have an appointment with our security system people to add cameras, and motion detectors (more). Why? We were robbed…not burglarized …in the middle of the night. Our neighborhood is under siege. Ten homes hit…and counting. One neighbor was out for dinner and the whole home was dismantled (yes, they took down the walls)
The motion-activated light on the garage of the house next door goes on when I am in the middle of my curved driveway. I don’t mind it much but the people who live across the cul-de-sac do. The light shines into some of their rooms.
Wow, @bevhills!! How unbelievable that they dismantled the house while the owners were out to dinner—sounds like the plot of a bad movie!
@somemom depending on the system the clarity can be quite good. If the cameras are pointed toward your patio or backyard or front or a window and the cameras are next door they may be able to see you more than you realize but across the street the privacy risk I would think is minimal
@bevhills so sorry you were robbed. What do you mean “yes, they took down the walls”?
That sounds horrible, BevHills!
Taking down walls? Exactly The pros bring crowbars and after finding the safe(s) and ransacking the whole home they go to the walls. These are pros. We were not damaged like that, but worse they came into our home when we were sleeping.
@bevhills wow people in your house while you are sleeping is the ultimate invasion. glad you are ok
Be hills, I think that is the ultimate scare. Most of us keep valuables in the bedroom, so we think that is the first place a thief would go. So brazen of them, to risk people at home. So glad you are safe.
There were 3 of us. Mr. Ellebud was in the den sleeping. They came in a den door. Happily my husband was sleeping…AND our puppy was sleeping. They would have killed the puppy if she made noise.
Holy JPMorgan, what a scary situation.
There is nothing of value to steal in our house… but if someone is to break in, our cats might escape. They are indoor only kitties.
Home invasions terrify me. I’ve never quite gotten over a middle of the night assault when I was a young teen, so we’ve always had a security system. Years ago, our budget didn’t stretch for monitoring but we had a loud alarm/siren plus the yard and window signs. Police told me that the signs alone were a big deterrent.
Bevhills, so glad y’all are okay.
