I currently have this as one of my top schools due to the aid other people say they offer. I’m just wondering what my chances might be to receive merit aid at this school because that is the only way i could attend
my current unweighted gpa is 3.86 but weighted it will end up at 4.6-4.8
my act is a 32
i am currently enrolled in 6 IB courses and will have a total of 13 IB courses for both years by next year
i am in forensics multiple and might be directing next year and am also involved in art club as well as a play
just hoping if anyone has some insight on the likeliness
What dragged down your GPA UW? Core classes or electives? Very solid ACT. Will you have a chance to visit MHC?
at IB we gain course credits as the classes go on so since i am about to be a senior, the weighted gpa will go up do to the addition of a 9th class. the core classes i take are IB chem and IB art along with IB math SL (standard level) IB English, IB french, IB history, as well as a product team and a Theory of knowledge. at IB schools we dont get the options of electives. i will be visiting MHC and hopefully getting an interview
“due” not “do”. Is a perfect UNweighted GPA at your school 4.0? Or put another way, did you receive the top grade in all your high school classes so far, because your 3.86 doesn’t sound like it. At AP schools the weighted GPA goes up as a student advances too. You don’t necessarily need to have perfect grades to get merit aid, but it is one component and plenty of applicants will have 4.0s. The rest of your application needs to be super strong and MHC must determine that you are a good fit. BTW Smith also offers attractive but highly competitive merit scholarships.
At IB, the councilors allways tell us that unless they don’t allow it, to submit our weighted gpa as our gpa. I honestly don’t know what that means but from what they we’re suggesting, it seems like our weighted is the one that is going to be looked at
“Counselors” not “councilors”. Sure you can submit your weighted GPA if the application doesn’t specifically state unweighted. But the admissions officers will be looking at your transcript with your GRADES. And that is true at every school you apply to, not just this one. If merit aid- and admissions decisions generally- were decided on the basis of the GPA number the applicants put down there would be absolutely no reliable benchmarks for comparison. High schools calculate GPAs in a multitude of ways, and again that is true at IB and AP programs and probably Hogwarts too. Good luck.
