Hi everybody, and congratulations to all who have been accepted to the MIT Class 2012. You certainly have a fantastic four years ahead of you (not to speak of an even more fantastic life thereafter).

My son is an international student who has been accepted to the Class of 2012. It appears that the international student orientation this year is scheduled on August 18-19, and that all freshmen are expected to be on campus by August 23 anyway.

Though MIT advises everybody not to book their plane tickets before these dates are firmed up in May, I was just wondering if this means that international students on financial aid can actually move into their (temporary) dorms from August 17/18, and that their housing bill (to be covered by fin. aid) covers the entire two weeks leading up to the beginning of class?

Also, can they set up and start using TechCash to buy food, etc., from the move-in date itself? Though, of course, we read in the blogs that if a freshman paid for food in her/his first month at MIT, something was seriously wrong! :)

Any information shared would be much appreciated.

Yes, that’s what it means – the dorms will have students staffing check-in starting on the first day international students are due to arrive.

I am fairly positive that international students’ dorm rates are not prorated for the extra few days they’re there in the beginning of the year, and that the fall term rate for the dorms covers all students regardless of their move-in date. I lived in the dorms for two summers, and summer residents are allowed to move to their fall rooms around August 15, and I did not pay extra for staying in my room ~2 weeks longer than the rest of the students in my entry.

Yes. Once your son has an MIT ID number, you (or he :)) can manage his TechCash account online ([here](http://techcash.mit.edu/)). He’ll send in his photograph over the summer, and his new ID card will be waiting for him when he checks in at the orientation desk.
