Move-in Day

My son is moving into Markley Hall. We have maps of traffic flow and whatnot, but we’re wondering how big a traffic jam is likely to exist. Can you get anywhere near the dorm on move-in day?

Thanks very much.

I think I got to Markley around 10am a few years ago…it wasn’t that bad. You’ll get in front of the dorm or in the parking lot right across the street. Don’t worry about it too much, I just recommend getting in early.

I worked for move-in-makers last year (on the hill) and much to my surprise, there are not that many people who move in during the afternoon hours compared to the morning hours.

Traffic wasn’t too bad around 10-11 a.m. They want you to unload and park elsewhere and take the bus if you need to help with set up. We had to get the carpet under the furniture before we could carry up the other stuff. Move-in Makers were soooo helpful! Large wheeled plastic 'laundry" carts are available and the elevators are great! There is a lot across the street which is free on weekends but you have to have a permit during the week. We had no problem at move-in but the parking patrol stinkers ticketed several parents during move out!!! Parking is a challenge in Ann Arbor!

Pack light - Markely’s rooms are … tight! Fan is essential! Daughter never turned on heat from the radiator and usually slept with windows open most of the winter. The heat radiated from the halls and floors above and below! And surge protectors and extention cords and a long internet cable - wireless is spotty from what I understand

I spent 4 weeks in Markley this summer. I never had a problem with the wireless, and nobody else at camp ever mentioned any issues with it.

Power strip/surge protector and extension cords can’t be emphasized enough. The doubles only have 4 outlets; a pair in the back left of the room and a pair in the back right of the room. So you’ll probably need to do some extra work figuring out where things go to make sure everything can reach a power source.

Daughter did plug into computer on ocassion. She reminded me that we bought an extended Coax cable for the TV. We set up the carpet and the beds and discovered the connection for the TV was the opposite wall near the closet.
