Movie Comparison

Last night when the temperature dropped into the single digits here in the Midwest, I flipped on the tv and channel surfed into a movie named “Rat Race.” It being a slow night, I watched most of the movie, missing the beginning. It reminded me a lot of “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.”

Has anyone else made the same connection? Neither is a great movie, but both seem to have the basic plot line, that being the chase for hidden money. Each movie twists the story differently.

I probably prefer MMMMW, but Rat Race has some funny moments, such as when Whoopi Goldberg and (?) turn down Kathy Bates’ offer to by squirrel food and end up on a pile of wrecked cars.

Contrast/Compare?

If you look back at the publicity when Rat Race was released, I think you’ll see that it was always and explicitly intended as a sort of remake of/homage to It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. In structure, concept, style, and in specific plot points and gags, there are myriad points of comparison.

I loved MMMMW when I was a kid, and have enjoyed it as an adult. But I have to confess that Rat Race has had me literally rolling around on the floor laughing.

I always thought the part with “Hitler” was quite funny.
