Movie editing “fails”

The discussion about the photoshopped boo boos in the recently released Royals family photo made me think about times we spot editing snafus in movies . There are the Starbucks coffee cupsx left on the set of movies supposedly taking place in the Wild West, and I recall noticing in the last Top Gun film, when Maverick and Goose’s son, Rooster, stole the airplane to get back to the carrier, they did not have their helmets when running to the plane, but they miraculously had the emblazoned helmet when flying the plane! What are some other classic editing errors you spotted?

In one movie I saw, they kept referring to a character’s BLUE eyes…except he had…brown eyes. It made me nuts. Can’t remember which movie!

The only one I can think of off-hand is in raiders where you can see the reflection off the glass between Harrison Ford and the King Cobra. But H catches stuff like this ALL the time.

I usually go to IMDB after watching a movie both for trivia and goofs. Lots of set errors there.

Oh, so many to list. Visible crew members/booms/wires are all too common.

The most recent error, IME, is Oppenheimer, set in the 1940’s, flying an American flag with 50 stars. Stars are added to the flag in the 4th of July after a state is admitted, so the current flag dates to 7/4/1960.

My favorite error is The Graduate, when Ben is driving to Berkeley in the upper deck of the Bay Bridge, i.e. the wrong direction.

Or In the Heights where the student didn’t get merit aid…

This is my husband’s favorite thing to do. Only he’s not very good at it and often thinks he’s found something that isn’t actually there. Just one one of the many reasons I dislike watching movies with him.

From Stanford!

Yes…it made me crazy when I saw the Broadway show…and the movie! Stanford…no merit scholarships…and this girl, was POOR.

Me too! And I saw it with Lin Manual Miranda and spontaneously said to my DH (I hope not too loudly) “ Stanford doesn’t give merit aid!!!”

Me too! In NYC.

Yep! I can’t recall if we saw it on or off Broadway

Occasionally, cars will be seen with license plates that could not have occurred in real life, such as a plate of a type that was no longer issued when the car was new, or a number sequence that was incorrect for the type of plate.

The OUTATIME plate in Back to the Future had 8 characters, but California never issued an 8 character plate number on the rising sun plate.

This was not a movie, but a tv xmas special with Scott Hamilton that they ran year after year. In one skate he makes a jump with gloves on and when he lands, seen from a different angle he has no gloves on! Used to crack me up every year!

Well, if we’re including TV, and tying into where this thread was spun off from, The Crown had the incorrect flag flying from HMY Britannia

By any chance, was it The Return of Martin Guerre?

There were many goofs in Carrie, but the car driving backwards in one of the final scenes was what I remember.

I always notice hair changes between shots in movies, way too numerous to mention, but DH knows I’ll point them out.

The raptors in all of the Jurassic Park Franchise are not Velociraptors, and ALL Dromaeosaurids were covered with feathers. All Dromaeosaurids, no exceptions. And paleontologists knew it, but I guess that unfeathered ones are scarier.

Forget about having the wrong flag. They have the wrong entire dinosaur.

Here are the sizes and shapes of different species of the genus Velociraptor.

And this damning quote in Jurassic Park:

“It’s a Unix system! I know this!”

Said by a kid who is looking at a graphics screen with absolutely no way to deduce the underlying operating system, much less have any knowledge of it that would be useful in the context of the scene.

Unix developers and sys admins the world over emitted a collective groan. We were all going with the story until this ignorant scene toppled the whole house of cards. For many, the movie completely fell apart at that point.

Also, he drives southbound on the 101 through the Gaviota Tunnel. The Gaviota Tunnel is on the northbound side of the road.
