I’m looking for suggestions for a movie to enjoy with my husband tomorrow evening.

W and I loved Juno.

A movie about a 16 year old pregnant girl might not be the best “Valentine’s Day” movie, but it is an excellent movie in any event.

I know some people who are going to watch Shakespeare in Love. I’m a big fan of Notting Hill personally, and I know some men who like it because they like Hugh Grant.

Personally, I have plans to go to the show RENT on V-day, but I think that story is too depressing and tragic to make the cut! Oh well, tickets were cheap.

Groundhog Day.

I’ve been reliably informed that I am the only straight, middle-aged male in the US who generally likes romantic comedy and musicals. For the guy who is open to romances:

Forget An Affair to Remember. To many stupid things to believe. It’s another story where if the people involved were honest with each other for five minutes the whole story would dissolve.

Two thumbs up for:
You’ve Got Mail
The Philadelphia Story
The Princess Bride
When Harry Met Sally
Groundhog Day
Splash
Roxanne
LA Story
Notting Hill (it’s not such a great movie, but I really like it for some reason)
Miss Congeniality
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
As Good as It Gets
Shakespeare in Love
Moonstruck
The American President (“Dig it Miss Wade, you’re the President’s girlfriend!”)
Clueless
Housesitter
Tin Cup
Bull Durham (really!)
Joe Versus the Volcano
Murphy’s Romance
Much Ado About Nothing (Branagh and Thompson version)
Valley Girl
Mystic Pizza

That should be enough. I’m going to go toss around a football and drive my pickup now.

The Forty-Year Old Virgin. I’m serious, it’s very romantic, comedic, and reasonably recent (rentable).

The virgin is the guy, and the female love interest is a HOT young grandma-divorcee. No bad language or nudity. Older teens could certainly watch this with you, or tell them to leave the house so the two of you can be alone for a change.

UMDad, I also found Juno charming! That’s on the big screen.

enchanted april

chocolat

Current favorite movie is “Once” great movie for any adult. The music in it is Wonderful!

I presumed the OP was planning on going out to see a movie.

W and I are Valentine’s Day non-participants. We came to that agreement at about our 3rd anniversary.

If I put a movie on like most listed above, my husband will be asleep within 10 minutes. Now if I put in Pulp Fiction, he can stay awake!

How romantic!!

Dave (makes a good double feature with American President)

Pride and Prejudice (the Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle version)

It Happened One Night

Wash Dad- Thanks for your suggestions. I think my D left a few of those at home. I do like Notting Hill also.

Any ideas on what to cook? I already made my speciallty salmon this week.

Actually going to stay in. DS leaves tomorrow, so we have the house to ourselves.

I really liked Moonstruck. Cher and Nicholas Cage when he was just, I believe, 23 years old. A really good comedy, romance, drama.

WashDad, make that one of two middle-aged men. My husband likes many romantic comedies, adores musicals, and also loves foreign films. It’s very easy to go to the movies with him, and I rarely have to sit through too many explosions!

Oh, and I second Moonstruck. It’s a great film.

Casablanca is H’s all-time favorite movie! Over Christmas, we “made” d and her bf watch it (as well as D2). LOL—D is on her college’s quiz bowl team…at a tournament this past weekend, there was a bonus question all about Casablanca—D was thrilled that she could contribute so much to the answers!!! Thanks, Dad!

Well Jerry McGuire for romantically challenged husbands. At least there’s football.

My love Annie Hall. Think it’s the best romantic comedy of all time, though Manhattan gives it a run for it’s money.

And, if one can ignore the plentiful Christmas references, Love Actually is actually perfect.

Oh, I really don’t like the Notting Hill, but seem to be in the minority.

WashDad: H likes all said movies, and is watching Project Runway DVD’s with me and says he enjoys it. But he is a photographer, so sort of up his alley.

I love The Holiday, The Philadelphia Story, Bridget Jones’s Diary - but my husband would probably prefer we watch the series Boston Legal.

I like a lot of the same movies as WashDad. (Not so sure about Valley Girl, though.)

For the Hugh Grant crowd, I still think Four Weddings and a Funeral is terrific.

Some others:

Before Sunrise: maybe the most romantic movie I know, in part because it’s almost realistic. This is a great, great movie to watch with your teenagers, too. Lots to discuss.

The Year of Living Dangerously: Young Mel Gibson, young Sigourney Weaver, politics, steamy sex, exotic locales, and Linda Hunt’s Oscar-winning performance as a really short dude of ambiguous loyalties. What’s not to love?

Victor/Victoria: Almost a perfect romantic comedy. With actual somewhat older people in it, including the practically perfect in every way Julie Andrews.

Everyone Says I Love You: For some reason, this commercially-failed Woody Allen musical comedy hits everyone in my family just right. All kinds of (straight) romance.

Kal Ho Naa Ho: My favorite Bollywood movie. Takes place entirely in New York City. Typical Bollywood love triangle – everyone is pretty, nice, and self-sacrificing, the male rivals argue over who gets the girl in the next lifetime.

“Once” is also great for young adults - - D and her g’friends at college watch it over and over and over . . .
