Santa was very good to me! I got a netbook. I’m going to be doing some travel where the internet will not be available so I can’t watch movies online. Because the netbook doesn 't have a DVD drive I can’t play the ones I have. Any helpful tips?

I have an external disk drive for my netbook. Any chance you could get one of those.

You can download movies or tv from itunes and watch online. Or you can get a separate dvd drive that plugs into the computer.

If you google ‘internet movies archive’ you’ll see a site where you can download public domain movies/shows for free. They’re usually from the 40s/50s but there are some other ones as well. I’ve downloaded them to my iPhone and watched them on flights before.

go to hulu.com and you can watch episodes of TV shows.

If you have a computer with a DVD drive, you can use a program called HandBrake to encode your DVDs into a file that can be played on your netbook (you may have to install VideoLAN for it to read DVDs)

The OP is asking about a netbook…and she won’t have internet access so won’t be able to use Hulu and the like. Netbooks don’t have DVD drives. It would depend on her particular computers specs as to whether she can do movies or not. They take up a ton of memory. DH says you can watch a movie but you cannot download a bunch of movies onto it…that’s why I have an external DVD. These are not heavy duty video machines.

You’re right. No internet, no hulu.com

Most of the current netbooks have either a 160G or 250G hard drive and there’s plenty left after the OS, etc. is installed for movies stored as MP4 compressed files. There should be enough room for many many hours of movies.

You could get a slim, portable dvd/cd player, probably cheaper than the one listed below, but you get the idea.

[Targus Slimline USB 2.0 DVD/CD-ROM External - DVD-ROM drive - Hi-Speed USB - 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD) - External - Black](<a href=“Google Shopping - Product not found”>Google Shopping - Product not found)

My husband showed me a movie on my new netbook (which, BTW, I LOVE), and it ran just fine but the screen IS small. Mine has an 8 hour battery life so the next time I fly southwest coast to coast, I’m taking a movie or two to occupy my time!! It worked just fine.

DH also said that the machine can hold a bunch of stored movies. He suggested that this OP download what they want…and as they watch them…delete them (if space is an issue).

Anyway…it CAN be done.

I guess I would be more concerned about power issues.
