Movies/TV shows that gave you the heebie-jeebies when you were a kid

I’ve been told that when I was little I became hysterical whenever I saw Groucho Marx or heard the theme song to his TV show. And no wise cracks about my age please.

Invaders From Mars (1953).

You were probably frightened by his duck.

*Scary movies for me were poltergist, children of the corn, and the twilight zone, with the little creature out on the wing of the plan…shivers! *

That was a great episode with Bill Shatner.

Pearl Jam did a skit on SNL a year ago that was a tribute to that episode.

Howdy Doody.

I hated that thing.

“The Birds” was the scariest movie I remembered from my childhood. I rented the DVD and watched with my D’s a few years ago…and it was terrible!

This time through, it was not scary at all. In fact, I found Tippi Hedren’s character so annoying that by the end of the movie, I was rooting for the birds! The kids just laughed.

For DH, his scariest memory was “Night of the Living Dead”. I had never seen it, so we rented it and watched with D2. D2 and I were convulsed with laughter – DH had built up the movie as the scariest ever, and it turns out to be a bad “B” movie.

“They’re coming to get you, Barbara” has turned into a code phrase for D2 and I. It means Dad’s off his rocker again!

[Barabbas (1961 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Barabbas (1961 film) - Wikipedia)

Anthony Quinn as Barrabas, trumped by Jack Palance as the chief gladiator of Rome. Lots of crucifixion and sulphur mine scenes.

Also the context: I saw it from the back of a station wagon at a drive-in theater at age 10, with my girlfriend and her parents, both of whom were Holocaust survivors.

Why on earth did they take us to that? Scared out of my mind, and the only person in the car who spoke coherent English was also 10 years old.

I think they knew they made a mistake, though; the following week they took us both back to see Annette Funicello in “Beach Blanket Bingo.”

I saw Wait Until Dark on TV- scared me to death.

Saturday afternoons and “Shock Theater,” which showed all the old black-and-white horror movies:

“The Creature From the Black Lagoon”
“The Mole People”

So stupid yet so scary.

And scary but definitely not stupid - the original “The Haunting.”

I was terrified of the flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz also.

13 Ghosts (that bed that smothered people)
Darby O’Gill & the Little People (the Banshee call)
The Pit and the Pendulum (the eyes in the last scene)
and (as an adult) It

Dark Shadows. I was sure Barnabas Collins was hiding under my bed at night.

Gone With the Wind…saw it as a six year old with older sister who was sixteen. The Atlanta scene when they amputated the man’s leg and he was screaming scared me to pieces. I was so afriad they were going to show his hacked off bloody leg. Love GWTW now.

Wicked Witch in the Wizard of Oz was scary too.

There was a show that came on every Saturday night called “Creature Feature” that always had weird scary stuff in it.

I was scared to death of Cruella DeVille in the original version of 101 Dalmatians. She reminded me of our reclusive neighbor who shunned children and wore a fur coat.

[The Beast with Five Fingers (1946) - IMDb](The Beast with Five Fingers (1946) - IMDb)

COMPLETELY freaked me out.

I was about 11 when " The Exorcist " came to theatres , and the radio commercials really scared me…I could be wrong , but I think they were not allowed to advertise on TV

Also Dark Shadows…couldn’t fall asleep when Barnabas Collins became a vampire ( I wasn’t allowed to watch , but I snuck a peek ) My mother was right to try to keep it from me ;)

Them . . . was on 8 times during a week I spent at my Dad’s in LA, and the sight of those mutant insects coming out of the desert will haunt me forever.

“The Blob” , the original version with a very young Steve McQueen.
I was so scared that I raced out of the theatre and ran all the way home.
Still don’t like scary movies.

There was an episode of Superman where a cloud figure of a huge representation of God was talking to Superman…on a road…that’s all I remember and I was petrified…

The Exorcist did me in as a teen; slept with my parents that night (at 16 years old)…cannot sit through anything similar since and have never been able to see that again…

but for some reason, Dark Shadows was one of my FAVORITE shows growing up; wish it were still on, in order of broadcast date (not like the SciFi channel where they occasionally bring it back); I’m too lazy (cheap) to buy the seasons…huge fan of David Selby (Quentin…anybody catch him as the lawyer in The Social Network??)

Twilight Zone (love those old reruns now  ). Still remember the first one I saw - some little girl talked to dead grandma on a toy phone.

After the TZ run ended, Serling had another show for a time called Night Gallery - also pretty scary.

I loved Night Gallery.
