“Emperors Club” starring Kevin Kline. Old fashioned prep school teacher with good old fashioned values who seems out of touch with modern life until the end when a morally bankrupt former student demonstrates how devastating a lack of character and integrity can be. The story is so good that it would be a great movie to do a short answer question on a college application. I also agree that Mr. Hollands Opus is excellent.

“College Road Trip” should be out on DVD soon. About as good (or bad) as you would expect, but Donny Osmond was kinda fun to watch.

Love Story: It’s about Harvard, of course, and, according to Al Gore, it’s about him (Class of 1969). There’s a laundromat in Cambridge that has a sign about its being in the movie.

Chariots of Fire: Cambridge University.
CPU: Wesleyan.

Non-College movies:
To Sir, With Love, Sydney Poietier.
Up the Down Staircase Sandy Dennis.
If (by Lindsay Anderson, about English prep school life)

Oxford Blues, with Rob Lowe (bad movie, gorgeous setting).
Certain episodes of Gilmore Girls (the road trip to Harvard, settling in at Yale, etc.)

If you’re up for a marathon, the TV show “Felicity” could also work well, and it can be rented on DVD. Four seasons, following the main character from move-in through graduation at a fictional university (basically NYU). Sometimes (usually…) the drama is over the top, but a friend brought it over while I was in college and my mom, sister and I really enjoyed it.

Love Story - from the IMDB

Now that I think of it, my daughter has never seen Love Story …, I need to get it. :-)

Horse Feathers, the Marx Brothers, Groucho is president of a university. Hopefully this was not mentioned above, I tried to be careful.

On a much sillier side:

“Animal House” (really, I’m surprised no one mentioned it.)

“Revenge of the Nerds”

and of course the new movie “21” about MIT students card counting in Vegas.

Wonder Boys

Breakfast Club (high school)
10 things I hate about you (high school)

Rudy - football at Notre Dame (love the soundtrack)

How High (2001) - Harvard University

“We Are Marshall”

The Great Debaters about a college debate team that ends up at Harvard under the tutelage of Denzel Washington

TV: The Bedford Diaries – filmed at Barnard

TV: The Education of Max Bickford (Richard Dreyfus)

TV: Jack and Bobby set at a college

The Wonder Boys (a real look at college)

First Daughter in which Katie Holmes goes to college

Say Anything – ultimate scene in plane on the way to college

The Paper Chase (about law students)

gross anatomy–med school

american graffiti–heading off to school

School Daze–Spike Lee movie that takes place at a historically black college.

Did someone already mention “A Beautiful Mind”–Princeton???

I liked The Paper Chase too.

I’ll add Back to School (Rodney Dangerfield) for a lighter look at college.

national lampoon’s van wilder;-)
