Good Will Hunting I still listen to Elliot Smith and I first heard him in that movie.
Brokeback Mountain Two words; Gustavo Santaolalla.
Philadelphia

Oh, dear, I can tell this is going to be on my mind all day!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch My son introduced me to this movie and its music.
The Breakfast Club The soundtrack of my high school years as well!
Chariots of Fire The first soundtrack I noticed and fell in love with.

Notting Hill. I left the theatre and immediately walked to the music store to purchase the soundtrack.

Truthfully, I’m not a big fan of soundtracks. They do add a lot to a movie for example, The Big Chill. What I mean by not being a fan is that I don’t really care to listen to soundtracks of and by themselves.

That being said, I have a buddy who absolutely loves the soundtrack to Prince of Tides.

Remember the Titans - great selection of 60s/early 70s music that suits the movie perfectly. We really love that film, btw.

Yes to Mom911 on LOTR! Also yes to farfellena on Bernard Herrmann. When Janet Leigh is driving in the rain in Psycho … chills!

And of course Max Steiner for GWTW (who did not win the Oscar for best score that year - Max Stothart did for Wizard of Oz. How’d they ever manage to choose?)

And I can’t say I like zither music, but I can’t imagine The Third Man without it.

pugmad: Thanks for Chariots of Fire. I’m mortified that I forgot it. And yes, I think it brought soundtracks to many people’s attention.

And a shout out to everyone else as well. I think it would be so much fun just to make my way through these soundtracks.

Into The Wild
We went to see the premier where Phil Donahue( looking very dapper in a leather jacket) took questions afterwards, but alas, his BFF
was a no show.

( oh Duh- I am mixing up movies- it wasn’t Into the Wild Donahue was involved with, but Body of War- which Eddie Vedder also was involved with- * I had a late night last night* :o but yah- I even went to Santa Barbara to see Eddie when he was on his solo * Into the wild* tour
)

Wow! You have all named great soundtracks.

Two of my favorites are Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Green Card, with Andie McDowell (sp?) and Gerard D…x (sp?).

Another movie I just saw ( also fantastic film)
with a great soundtrack
A Single Man.

What a great thread!!!

Let the Bad Times Roll Westerberg, Paul
Turning Blue Swallows
What I Done Rodriguez, Andrew
Soul Meets Body Death Cab For Cutie
There Goes the Fear Doves

I also love the soundtrack to "August Rush

Great thread is right. Sound tracks for me are really a key part of enjoying a movie.

One that I noticed in spite of (or because of) the quiet tone of the movie was from The Painted Veil with Edward Norton. Haunting, beautiful, different.

Another vote for

The Last of the Mohicans
Gettysburg
LOTR

plus

Captain Blood
The Sea Hawk
The Natural

I’m not going to get into any of the movies with song-based soundtracks, there are just too many great ones and it’s really a whole 'nother genre to me. But I will say that I think Randy Newman was seriously robbed when he didn’t win for When She Loved Me, which not only is a beautiful song but actually was integral to advancing the plot and the characterization of the film.

Love the late Maurice Jarre.
Some of his soundtracks:

Lawrence of Arabia
Dr Zhivago
The Man who would be King
and my favorite
Is Paris Burning ?(1966) I highly recommend searching for part of this soundtrack on youtube (Paris brule-t-il?) since this film is rarely screened on American TV. (best clip is “Is Paris burning opening”)

Like others I am also a big fan Of Bernard Herrmanns compositions. Two years back, I attended a great evening with the LA Phil at the Disney Center. Steven Speilberg narrated a
concert featuring clips and music of John Williams (with Mr W conducting) and the music of Bernard Herrmann was introduced and discussed by Martin Scorsese. Bernard Herrmann’s music was so immediate and stunning performed live…it knocked our socks off.

What no Easy Rider? I think it was the first movie to ever use “popular music” as a soundtrack. I like the music in Pretty Woman, also, for movies that used popular soundtracks.

Movies had been using popular music as sound tracks as far back as the twenties. In the fifties movies such as “Black Board Jungle”(1955)introduced Rock and Roll as soundtrack material.
My favorite films using pre-existing music are “Mean Streets”, “Rushmore” ,“O Brother Where art Thou” and “The Graduate”.

Garden State

In fact, I downloaded it to my iTunes yesterday because I couldn’t find D2’s copy of it in her room!

Also have to second Juno.

The Natural (Randy Newman is a genius!), DeLovely, and Chariots of Fire (best.movie.ever)are my three favorites. Another great soundtrack guy (films and TV) is Mark Mothersbaugh - his talent extends far past his Devo days…

Into the Wild, struck a chord
with me because while I enjoy Krakauer’s writing- I felt that Into the Wild was about a " spoiled rich kid who made dumb choices".

But the music & especially the lyrics that were written for the film showed me that there was more to it, and more depth behind the motivation of the adventure than just a macho youth.
( Not to mention I could listen to Eddie sing everyday… oh I do!
)

Slumdog Millionaire - I think it won a Grammy last year for this category
