Movies with great music....

No kidding Rachacha, Mark Mothersbaugh is a genius. (He composed and coordinated the soundtracks to two of my faves: Rushmore and the Royal Tannenbaums)

Watched the movie “Hopscotch” with Walter Matthau last night. Fun film, with great music. Lots of Mozart and other good stuff (some of which fit the action in the film more than I realized): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hopscotch_(film)

Road to Perdition

Gone With the Wind

Blood Diamond

Jurassic Park

Public Enemies

Saturday Night Fever

and the original Star Wars soundtrack.

Dirty Dancing

My son, who is a fiddler, loved the use of “On Raglan Road” by the Dubliners in In Bruges. Carter Burwell was the composer/music producer for that film, as well as most of the Coen brothers’ films. He uses an interesting combination of his own compositions and others’ themes/works. For example, in Hudsucker Proxy, there were some arrangements of compositions by Aram Khachaturian that were very effective in a quirky way.

Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven.

But if you’re actually going to watch the movie, make sure to get the Director’s Cut. The theatrical release was butchered horribly by the editing.

I agree with those who voted for Jurassic Park and American Graffiti. I also like the soundtracks to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies – in small doses. They get a little overwhelming if you listen to the whole thing.

I’ll 2nd Out of Africa and add Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet with a score by Henry Mancini.

Can’t believe that I forgot one of my absolute favorites:
The Commitments!

Oh just thought of another one - Last Tango in Paris had a great soundtrack – Gato Barbieri

The Umbrellas of Cherburg

Schindler’s List (the music makes me cry).

Many already listed, plus most of “Garden State.”

I seldom run out and buy a DVD of a movie soundtrack but I just had to have the ones from Paprika and Run Lola Run. Yes, they’re both fairly obscure, but well worth seeing (and hearing!)

most of the great ones have been mentioned, but i’ll add ‘Once’

Le Choriste

One of my all time favorites: Cinema Paradiso

The Collector. My first Maurice Jarre score. The first score I ever noticed as a young teen.

Elvira Madigan and Amadeus, for reasons quite obvious (I brake for Mozart)

Just remembered Schindlers List. Can’t believe I forgot it earlier.

Or Zorba the Greek or Dr. Zhivago.

Like Wharfrat, I’m not a big fan of the traditional soundtrack (but agree the Star Wars ones are brilliant) and I liked most of The Lord of the Rings, sometimes though I thought it was intrusive and would have been better without the choral stuff. I much prefer (when it’s appropriate of course) movies with rock sound tracks like American Graffiti and The Big Chill. I love the theme song to* MASH, though I don’t remember how much music was in the rest of the movie.

I’m not a huge fan of musicals, but love Kiss me Kate and Cabaret. Oh and I love all those big tap dancing movies from the 30s - 42nd Street I think was my favorite of the bunch.
